How come he shied away from the chat show circuit?

Carson
Letterman
Cavette
Leno....

Would've been great tv, but all shows were snubbed.

Why should he have to give interviews? I hear he's retired and suffering from memory problems. He's entitled to a break.

He won. Get over it.

reply

That's not what he's asking.

reply

Jack hates interviews and he was a big enough star by 1970 that he didn't have to do any interviews.

reply

Low tolerance for BS, knowing him...

"Your mother puts license plates in your underwear? How do you sit?!"

reply

I suppose its better than turning into a 'sofa whore', that is DeNiro. Going on any chat show to plug his latest movie.

Nicholson was following the lead of Cary Grant, who was the only guest that Johnny Carson wanted who never came on Johnny's Tonight Show.

The idea with both Grant and Nicholson was: you had to pay to see them, and only in movies.

Both Grant and Nicholson broke this rule to appear on the Oscar shows, which were "of movies."

I think Nicholson finally broke the rule a little in his older age: he did a walk-on with the line 'You can't handle the truth" on Saturday Night Live, and he did a 60 Minutes interview in his much older age. And earlier this year, he introduced the "Political" segment on the SNL 40th Anniversary show.

The seventies generation of serious actors don't like the campaigning for either awards or promoting their work. They aren't used to that. They prefer to let their work speak for itself.

reply

Low boredom threshold.
