I won't bother defending Kidman, I believe her body of work speaks for itself, but I will say that your view of her early years ("She mostly played girlfriend roles and no one knew she could act well") seems ignorant to the esteem she already held in Australia at the time. We had the luck of being able to see her blossom with strong performances in local TV series such as Vietnam and Bangkok Hilton, and absolutely nail her first starring film role in Dead Calm, so we Australians knew very well that she could not only act, but she was special and had a screen presence that other Australian actors at the time could only hope for. I believe it was Dead Calm that brought her to the attention of Tom Cruise in the first place actually, which is why she got to audition for and land the Days of Thunder role.
It's a shame you don't appreciate her later work, but overall I think your view of her personality is a bit unfair. She's never seemed to be anything but genuine and committed to being the best actor she can be, and she always speaks highly of those she works with. I'm a fan, so I appreciate I might sound like a biased Australian, but we're pretty bloody proud of her over here!
