Do you think he owes his career to John Travolta?

I think Richard Gere owes his career to John Travolta

All the roles he got famous for were turned down by Travolta

Days Of Heaven (1978)
American Gigolo (1980)
An Officer & A Gentlemen (1982)
Pretty Woman (1990)
Chicago (2002)

Do you think Richard Gere owes his career to Travolta?

reply

Part of me likes the idea of Travolta in Officer and a Gentlemen and part of me doesn’t.

The choreographed dance scene with he and Foley would’ve been epic.

I’m not sure Travolta could’ve pulled off the dislikable smug Mayo character.

reply

Sure. They were basically the same person back then, pretty interchangeable. This kind of thing probably crops up a lot behind the scenes of Hollywood. Nobody will tell you more than Travolta himself that he is notoriously bad at choosing movies to do.

reply

I remember hearing that said some years back. Those first three certainly put Gere on the map.

reply

Did not know this.
Certainly Travolta helped him a lot.

reply

No. But Travolta would have failed miserably in this roles:
American Gigolo (1980)
An Officer & A Gentlemen (1982)
Pretty Woman (1990)

He can't play really, really unlikeable and still be sympathetic (maybe misspelled).
