Richard Gere's Height

I once passed by him in Manhattan, in September or October 1998. I stood there briefly, just a meter away, to make absolutely sure it was him. Gere was surrounded by a large entourage who literally encircled him. I took a closer look and sure enough, it was him.

I suspect that the official info regarding his height is totally incorrect, way off the mark. I am 185 cm, and he was almost a head shorter than me. I wasn't wearing heels nor was I standing on a chair, and he wasn't slouching. My estimate is that he is around 164-167 cm. Certainly no more than 170.

If that's true i wonder if Tom Cruise and Dustin Hoffman are much smaller

reply

Dustin Hoffman doesn't try to hide his height. He is supposedly 167 cm.

reply

I think he's about 5'9 or 5'10. He must have a slender frame.

reply

I think he's more in the 5'7"-5'8" range. I have some friends in Santa Fe, who have seen him in person several times. They always remark at how short he is, and how big his head is. They say the same thing about Tom Cruise.

At 170cm, that's 5'7". He likely was not that short in 1998 but celebrities are notorious for over stating their heights, particularly male celebrities. He was likely closer to 5'8". Although it is fairly easy to see if you're shorter or taller than someone, when passing them on the street, in a store, etc., it is not that easy to estimate a height difference.

Celebrities always seem smaller in person (unless they're giants)..usually it's not just a matter of height but how much frailer or slimmer they are off screen. Movies actually do build a lot on the appearance of their size.
I met Paul Newman once and was surprised at just how small and thin he really was (this was in the 80's and he was still very healthy). I was also pretty close to Paul Newman but unless you're heel to heel you can't really judge inches quite so accurately. I'm 5"5 and would've guessed his height similar to Gere's.

Richard Gere is a good 3 or 4 inches taller than Kim Bassinger in the several movies they've made and she's represented as being 5'7" (and that's discounting any heels she might be wearing). Maybe she's 5'6" and they lied about her too but that would still make him at least 5' 10".
He's definitely not tall but more medium height. I believe his 5'11" is close to accurate. That's not tall for a man.

reply

5'9" is average American height ... so 5' 11" is pretty tall.

reply

He looks short as hell in An Officer and a Gentleman

reply

Maybe she's 5'6" and they lied about her too but that would still make him at least 5' 10".I doubt Kim Basinger's height has been exaggerated since her daughter is 6'2" and none of her Baldwin aunts or cousins are tall. In Hollywood, you're either too short or too tall. The actor Lee Pace lies about how tall he is because he can't get parts because he is too tall. I would not want their jobs.

What drugs are you on? 5'11 (180cm) is as tall a man can get. It's pretty much the "perfect" or desired height. It's a standard Hollywood male height.

And are you equating frailness and slimness with shortness? Most of the sturdy and muscular people I know are barely over 5'7. Heck, many bodybuilders and weightlifters (big, strong men) are hardly over 5'9.

If anything, taller people tend to be lanky and overly slim. I thought that this was well-known?
