Keep in mind, Johnny Depp of all people went off the grid for some time, picking up some of the most bizarre roles during his 'acting evolution'. As of eight (short) years ago, he's the most widely recognized actor in Hollywood. He's not just good, he's GREAT and has a hell of a career to show for it-he's been nominated and never won an Oscar either. He and Ralph are almost exactly the same age.
The moral of the story is, Ralph Fiennes will have his "day" so to speak. All of this is just a milestone, working and working. Oscar or no, he's still got the good stuff, and a hell of a resume to date.
Ummm... Johnny Depp is not great. Playing bug-eyed cartoon characters is not acting, it is mugging.
He certainly not in the same league as Fiennes

I agree, he is an amazing actor. There were a lot of people in this film that definitely deserve an Oscar for their amazing, heartfelt performances. Can I nominate Alan Rickman?
