Denzel Washington vs Russell Crowe

I can't digest the truth that Denzel beats Crowe in the oscar race that year(2002)... I watched both the movies as many times as i can and loved both at its genre....but still, when acting was considered, although Washington was great in "Training Day", i couldn't imagine replacing Crowe's class act in "Beautiful Mind".

What do you guys think about Washington holding an upperhand over Russel Crowe that year? Thanks!

My arguments are completely based on my own interests and assumptions ;)

While I like both actors, Russell Crowe was robbed that year. He really deserved to win. IMO Russell should have had 2 or 3 oscars in his cabinet not just one.

I'm *beep* furious that Crowe didn't win, his is one of the best performances ever filmed. Only reason he lost is because Denzsl lost in '92 to Pacino. That's all it is. It was a make up Oscar.

and denzel should have won for malcom x swings and round abouts

It's no real question. Sure Denzel was Great as well, but crowe was amazing. He was really robbed. Denzel only got it because he was Robbed for Malcolm X. And because the Academy Wanted to give the Oscar to a Black actor to avoid controversy. Art this Point barely any black actor had Won an Oscar.

They are my two favorite actors of my generation. How can you pick between apples and oranges? I love both.

If either are in a movie I'll watch. Personally, I think Crowe is more diverse, where Denzel exceeds as a cop or in uniform. But, I love watching both on screen.

Both gave excellent performances in their respective movies. Training Day end scene, where he gives a monologue, that scene alone won oscar for Denzel's acting, but again Crowe did excellent Job in the full movie, not just one scene. I thought Russel Crowe should have won it.

I thought this thread was gonna be about Virtuosity.

Honestly I felt it was all about timing. I think Denzel had been around a while and nominated a few times so they wanted to give him an award. I agree with another poster than he should have won for Malcolm X or even Hurricane was magnificent, he was nominated for both. Both movies also happened to have a heavy focus on racism which is quite controversial for the Oscars in the 90s. So I think they just gave it to him that year. If it had been up to me he'd have won twice already for Hurricane and Malcolm X and either Sean Penn or Russell Crowe would've won in 2002. I don't even watch the Oscars anymore because I think too many other factors besides the quality of acting and role go into the decision.
