Why you don't see Sean Connery onscreen anymore

https://www.looper.com/148339/why-you-dont-see-sean-connery-onscreen-anymore/

Sean Connery is basically a living legend. For starters, his name will always be inseparable from James Bond, thanks to the 1962-1983 run that saw him starring in seven films as the suave secret agent. Later in his career, he appeared in critically acclaimed films like The Untouchables, which earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, and popular franchises like Indiana Jones. His achievements have garnered some serious accolades. He has been voted both "The Greatest Living Scot" and "Scotland's Greatest Living National Treasure," and in 1999, People declared him the "Sexiest Man of the Century." And to top it all off, he was officially knighted in 2000.

Connery worked his way up from his first gig as a milkman in Edinburgh to become one of the world's most accomplished actors. It's the kind of rags to riches story that would inspire any young artist, but today, Connery is far more likely to be spending time with his family at home in the Bahamas than rubbing elbows with other big names on the red carpet. In addition, several scandals may have prompted him to stay out of the spotlight. Here's why you don't see Sean Connery at the movies anymore — and why you probably won't catch him on the silver screen again.

Oh, a looper article.... yeah, I'll pass on that nonsense.

reply

Hey, he retired!

He made his millions and won his Oscar, why shouldn't he give Hollywood the finger and take off to enjoy life.

reply

This!☝🏻

reply

He realized he had enough of the industry after making his hattrick of terrible acting decisions by turning down Lord of the rings and The Matrix and then not turning down The League.

reply

Can I ask which role in the "Matrix" films he was offered?

Morpheus or Agent Smith?

reply

Morpheus. Then he turned down the role as the architect in Matrix Reloaded. The later wasn't as bad of course since the sequels weren't as well received. It's weird he said no again though when knowing the success of the first film. He had the same excuse as with LOTR, that he didn't understand the story.

reply

I think he was correct to turn down the role of Morpheus, even if doing so wasn't a good career move.

Connery is just too... hearty for the Matrix universe.

reply

Yeah, him in that role feels a little wrong in my head as well so maybe the movie would not have been as good anyway if he said yes, he would've been cool as the architect though i think.

reply

Yeah, that's the only role I can see him in, and even then I have doubts.

He's just too... vital to play a program.

reply

I see what you mean, but we never know for sure.

reply

Or maybe because he's nearly 90.

I saw an interview with him 3 or 4 years ago. He looked and sounded frail at that time so now...?

Retirement

When Connery received the American Film Institute's Lifetime Achievement Award on 8 June 2006, he confirmed his retirement from acting. On 7 June 2007, he denied rumours that he would appear in the fourth Indiana Jones film, stating that "retirement is just too much damned fun".[65]

WTF Happened to SEAN CONNERY?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Id6XV0pa3qc

n our latest WTF series, we take a look at some of our favorite stars and filmmakers who have seemingly disappeared or altered their careers over the years to the point that begs the question; WTF happened? Now, before you think we're just picking on celebrities or running some gossip rag stuff, think again! We take a fun (and sometimes funny), researched and fair approach, looking at all angles that led our subject to wherever they are now (which isn't necessarily a bad place at all). If anything, it answers the question on where these fine folks went, how they got there and where you can find 'em now.

This time out we take a look at the career of the legendary Sean Connery!

The last film I saw Sean Connery in was The Untouchables. It was a great film.

reply

This seems stupid considering the fact that Sean Connery is almost 90 years old now. Might as well ask why Dick Van Dyke isn't doing acting anymore.

reply

I don't buy the whole "well he's almost 90 argument". Clint Eastwood is 90 and he's still working. William Shatner the last time that I checked, is close to 90 and he is also still active. Sean Connery has been off screen for a good 17 years know. He wasn't 90 then. And before you say, well he was already old, Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino are roughly around the age that Sean Connery was when he did League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

reply

Whatever. If you can't understand why someone who is almost 90 doesn't want to work anymore, I don't even know what to tell you.

reply

Sean Connery hasn't worked since he was about in his early 70s though. He wasn't exactly almost 90 when he decided that he didn't want to work anymore. And bare in mind that Connery went out quite unceremoniously. Did you even read what I just said!?

reply

He wasn't enjoying the job and didn't need the money - seems a reasonable choice to me.
I guess we can ponder his ability or confidence to take on the kind of roles that he might be offered at this stage of his career but that loops back to not enjoying the job anymore.
