I surmise that, on a pragmatic level, there weren't many roles in Hollywood for a Filipino / Chinese-looking actress who would not do kung fu. From the point of view of a movie producer, that particular ethnic type would only be considered in a martial arts role, or as a prostitute who is murdered by the villain. There wouldn't have been any roles for her as the leading lady because she isn't Caucasian, and I assume she wasn't interested in just playing murder victims.
To be fair, the 1990s seemed to chew up a lot of actresses who were there one minute and gone the next, I'm thinking of Juliette Lewis and Laura Dern in particular. And she has gone on to a fairly successful singing career. And she can look at herself naked in the mirror every morning, which is reward enough.
