"Before Elvis there was nothing"
John Lennon said it.
shareHe was mistaken.
shareIn what way ? Elvis changed the face of music forever
shareYes he did! When I was in high school in Hollywood CA, my friends and I used to visit Elvis when he stayed at the Hollywood Knickerbocker hotel while he was making movies at Universal Studios. He was very friendly.
shareI love Elvis, so sad how his life ended, but what a singer, seemed like a really nice guy, I still think Mickey Newbury did American Trilogy better though, it was his song I guess, anyway, Elvis, Love ya !
shareElvis was a great performer. He had a strong influence on rock and roll, but to say he "changed the face of music forever" is hyperbole. Even if he did, it does not mean that there was nothing important before him. A bit of self-education about the history of music in general, and pop music in particular, will enlighten you to the realization that Lennon was either an ignorant fool, or he was joking.

I think perhaps it has been taken too literally, Lennon was an Art School graduate so he certainly knew what had come before musically, indeed they spent their early years playing classic covers of the era, I think it was more of a compliment to what Elvis brought to the table in Lennon's characteristic hyperbolic style.
shareHe changed the crotch of music forever.
sharetrue
shareFor White people to publicly worship.
Little Richard innovated the sexualized male performer for pubescent White America in the 50s but because he wasn't White he could never attain Elvis' reach both nationally and globally (thus John Lennon's comment).
For sure. I think the truth in Lennons quote lies in the sense that the world outside of the blues and black performers didn't have a sense of what rock is until Elvis.
shareIt wasn’t just stage presence and charisma, though. Elvis had a much better voice than Little Richard.
shareelvis was a better singer than those who came before. people seem to forget that.
shareimho, Elvis also copied a lot of Dean Martin's singing style, but because his music was younger as he was himself compared to Dean he adopted rhythm and blues which was called "colored music" back then, so culturally Elvis was a bridge for that genre.
shareLittle Richard was NO Elvis Presley. Not even close.
shareA lot of Asians like him too. It's not a race thing, if that's true only black people should like black music.
shareThere was land, sea, wind, fire.
Years later they would reorganize and become Earth Wind and Fire.

no on artist invented a genre from whole clothe. they borrow and reuse and innovate based off what came before them. its why punk rock didnt come about in the 50s.
sharepunk rock started in the 70's and was unique in form and style. people still copy the look today.
shareyou dont know anything then if you think it came outa nowhere... just like how Elvis didnt, or the Beatles. small slight changes, borrowing, ect. wow do you ever get anything right?

British punk: The British punk scene was led by groups like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Damned, and the Buzzcocks that merged the catchy melodies of folk music with the raw edge of garage rock, the speed of hard rock, and (in the case of The Clash) reggae.
Punk music traces its roots to 1970s London.
thats what I said, lol. I used to have the Sex pistols, clash, Exploited, Dead Kennedys, Minor Threat, etc on tape and record. I listened to all of it. I was into thrash, speed metal, heavy metal before it was cool. I remember listening to Metallica and people would make fun of me. Now everyone loves Metallica. although rocking out to Slayer in my trans am would repel people, lol.
every generation has a band or singer that is synonymous with that era. Chuck Berry was playing rock n roll before Elvis, but Elvis gets all the credit.
dont forget about Chuck Berry.
