Overrated

Im sure this is not the most original thread in this board and this is being dicussed over and over again and dont get me wrong im a huge fan but people act like he was the Davinci of cinema, like the title of best filmmaker of all time belong to him by far and without any need for discussion and what is worst always overlooking another great directors like Kurosawa and Hithcock who were more prolific and maybe even more influential than Kubrick

People see Kubrick like the director who never did wrong and everything come from him was a superb masterpiece but in kubrick filmography not everything was 2001 and Clockwork Orange, for example Full metal jacket is a very good movie but is not the best war movie of all time not even for 1984 remember Apocalypse now was made in 1979, Lolita is not the best adaptation of Nabokov novel even when Nabokov wrote the screenplay for the Kubrick version he dind't like the movie and i think he dint go to the premiere. Adrian Lynne version i think is way superior. Eyes wide shut is a very unique movie but i dont think is one of the best of all time. The shinning (and this is very personal) i never see the fuss about it, is good, is not the best horror movie and i think most of his popularity is due to all the fan theories about the plot

He is one of the best of all time that for sure but is not the best without debate, that is ridiculous. David Lean, Kurosawa, Hitchcock, Ozu, Scorssese and many others are being disrespected when people act like there is not debate

Kurosawa directed Ran almost completely blind FFS

And i dont think there is a unique best director of all time, but if there was any definitly is not Kubrick

Yeah he’s overrated, made some good films but never seen all the fuss myself, question that to his pretentious fan base though and they just tell you that you’re a troll or that you “don’t get it”

You’re a troll and you don’t get it 😉

My favorite Kubrick movies, the ones I watch again every few years, are "The Killing" and "Barry Lyndon". I like "Killer's Kiss" and "Dr. Strangelove". "Paths of Glory", "Spartacus", and "Lolita" are great, but I find them too disturbing to thoroughly enjoy. The rest I don't care about--including the borefest "Space Odyssey" (as far as "getting it" is concerned, I get what it's about; I don't get why anyone loves it).

One thing that's impressive about Kubrick is that he has such a reputation, and fame that has persisted a quarter century after his death, but only directed thirteen feature films, plus three short subjects that hardly anyone has seen.

I watched the Shining the other day properly for the first time. my main thoughts weren't "this is a great film" although of course it was a "quality product" so to speak, my main thoughts were "each of these scenes took about 50 takes"
