I am converted
As a child of the late 1970's I was heavily into the Spielberg/ Lucas type of films (and have been a very big fan of film in general my entire life).
I approached Kubrick's films sometime in my early teens and watched 2001 and Full Metal Jacket.
After which I dismissed him as having nothing to offer me (to my great regret now). I remember quite plainly using phrases like "he never made a good film" and "What? the one where nothing happens?"
I recently decided to re-watch 2001 to see if my feelings over the years would have changed. It is amazing what a couple of decades of maturity can do. I was amazed, blown away in fact.
From feeling he had nothing to offer, to the awe I felt of watching the masterpiece that is 2001 I am severely humbled and offer a full apology for not "getting" Kubrick's work.
I look forward to watching the rest of his films now.
