Unofficial trilogy
Dr Stranglelove - 2001 - Clockwork Orange
Does anyone else see this
Ive even heard a theory that all of Kubricks films coexist in the same universe. what made u think those 3 are connected?
shareObviously all his films are thematically similar but also dr Stranglelove ends with the world being destroyed, 2001 stars with a new world and ends with the star child and clockwork orange begins with Alex's face so if you watch them back to back there's a clear connection between the three of them
shareThey are three sci-fi films, his three excursions into SF, the first apocalyptic (a tragi-comedy, a black satire about man's increasing ability - and perverse eagerness - to annihilate himself and his world), the second a sublime metaphysical meditation, a vision of the wider cosmos in which man is properly seen as a peripheral bit-part player (the precursor to any notion of freedom), and the third a darkly pessimistic dystopian portrayal of a corrupt, nihilistic, and hedonistic society or social order in which everyone is 'fúcked up', in which everyone is a 'clockwork orange', in which everyone is complicit, presciently much like our present world, alas, which is even more 'fúcked up' than the fictional world imagined in Kubrick's film.
shareWell put. In regards to your final statement there, I often wonder what a Kubrick film would be like now, it seems like there would be plenty of fuel for the fodder so to speak. I have the feeling that Post 9/11 Kubrick would have been even more next level, had he not died in 99.
sharedr Stranglelove ends with the world being destroyed, 2001 stars with a new world and ends with the star child and clockwork orange begins with Alex's face
That's interesting, but I don't think it was done on purpose. Remember, all three, were based on works by other authors (though altered considerably), so its unlikely that they were meant to comprise a trilogy.
As the other guy pointed out, all three were initiated by other writers, not by Kubrick. You're looking too hard to find coincidences. I often wonder if Kubrick's autism was contagious given the illogical nonsense spouted by his fans.
Also 2001 takes place in the year 2001 and begins with the dawn of man. How can that exist in the same universe as Dr Strangelove, which ends with nuclear annihilation in the mid 20th centry?
Dr Strangelove ends with the end of one world and 2001 starts with the beginning of another
shareIt's more like six loosely interlinked films, with similar concerns.
Dr Strangelove - ends with world blowing up
2001 - begins with the beginning of a new world
2001 - ends with benevolent baby looking at camera
Clockwork Orange - opens with evil baby drinking breast milk and looking at camera
Clockwork Orange - ends with people in period dress
Barry Lyndon - opens with people in period dress
Barry Lyndon - ends with date of French Revolution/End of Old World
Shining - opens in the wilderness of the New World/Civilization heads West
Shining - ends with Overlook's caretakers dead/New World tamed
Full Metal Jacket - opens with new caretakers being prepared/New World heads East
Full Metal Jacket - job done, caretakers head home. Ends with "wet dreams" and "who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?"
Eyes Wide Shut - The Club/"Have you seen my wallet?"
