I need confirmation that he's not overrated.

I've only seen Full Metal Jacket and I HATED IT. It had no likable/relatable characters and made me sick when the ending VO came on the soundtrack. People say that he's a genius, but right now I view him as somewhat of a psychopath. I despised FMJ so much that I'm afraid to watch another Kubrick film, so it would be nice if one of you Kubrick fans could point me in the right direction to bring Mr. Kubrick redemption in my eyes.

You probably will not enjoy him as a filmmaker.

His most accessible is The Shining, then try Clockwork Orange, 2001, and Dr. Strangelove.

If your criteria for a movie's worth is whether or not it has any "likable / relatable characters" then it's probably safe to say that Kubrick is not for you.

Incidentally, what was it in FMJ that led you to conclude Kubrick must've been "somewhat of a psychopath"?

Admit it to yourself that even if hate is your initial response to seeing it, (and thats a rather strong emotion for a movie) you find yourself thinking about the movie days even weeks after you saw it. I too believe that if you grow a little more, walk a few more years in life you may come to see FMJ's merit.

Try any other Kubrick films he only made 13 feature films and 10 are masterpieces. Even if you disagree it's pretty well undisputed that he's the most influential American film maker around besides Wells. So check out some more of his work and if you come to find some you do like give FMJ another try because it is a major piece of cinema.

My Kubrick Ranking (in order)

The Shining
Eyes Wide Shut
2001: A Space Odyssey
A Clockwork Orange
Dr. Strangelove
Barry Lyndon
Paths of Glory
Full Metal Jacket
Lolita
The killing
Spartacus
Killers kiss
Fear and Desire

Dont worry...i am with you. I have seen almost all of Kubrick movies and i cant rate any of his film more than 5( on a scale of 10). I call kubrick like directors are pseudo directors who wants to make so called "artistic" movies and "class" movies. This is like trying hard to write a book to win a Noble....where the author forgets the characters of the story and wants to see art everywhere. And there are people/critics who support them and market such "art", Which i frankly feel is trash, as its unreal and un-enjoyable and un-relatable to life (Sorry for grammatical mistakes).

Sergio Leone and F.F.Coppola, i feel are 1000 times better director than this over rated Kubrick guy

I can see where you are coming from, but I will make a couple points. First, FMJ is in my opinion one of his weakest films, even though it is one of the most well remembered. Second, Kubrick covered a wide variety of subjects in his films. I admit I am biased because he is pretty much my favorite director of all time, but I am convinced that basically anyone will be able to find some Kubrick film that either speaks to them in some way or that they find thoroughly entertaining. I'd say his greatest audience pleaser is Dr. Strangelove, a great war satire. Since it's more light-hearted you may be able to identify with it more. I would also recommend The Killing, which is far and away his most underrated work. It's an excellent film-noir style crime caper that doesn't incorporate nearly as many of the darker elements of his later work. It's also more plot-driven, less of a character study so less of a chance for you to hate it for the reasons you listed above.

I will also add that my personal favorite is 2001: A Space Odyssey, which some people find inaccessable or pretentious, but I think is one of the most breathtaking film experiences I've ever had.

I love sentences like this where you can instantly tell a person's opinion has no value whatsoever.
