What happened to Brando between 1968 and 1972?

In '68 he costarred in The Night of the Following Day. He was young and thin with an athletic build. In '72, just four years later (check my math), he starred in The Godfather, where he was old and fat.

I know in The Godfather he put cotton balls in he mouth to give the sound he wanted and that would make he checks puff but I think he was genuinely out of shape.

1968 is when Betty Crocker introduced their "irresistibly" cinnamon rolls. I think Brando may have become hooked around that time.

From personal experience I can tell you that you can easily put on quite a bit of weight in just 1 month, let alone 4 years.

Getting into his late 40's, probably not really as active as he used to be.

Maybe it's splitting hairs here, but? He wasn't what I'd call obese during the Godfather shoot. He was gaining, but he wasn't there yet.

They also used makeup and prosthetic to make him appear older.

He lost weight for The Godfather but he lost too much so they had to resort to padding him. He was overweight but not as bad as he looks in that movie.

Too much partying. He was a troubled guy that battled depression for pretty much all of his life. Just look at how many children he fathered.

The Godfather bit was just character work. Despite what some say, he was a well trained actor that had a lot of technical skill and knowledge.
