Tried to like her...

No doubt she was pretty, but I think not my kind of beauty. No doubt a good actress. She was one of my Mom's favorites, so I honestly tried to be into her. But, something was always unappealing to me about her. She always felt like an old woman even when she was young - maybe something in how she moved her body - subtle things about how she moved her body were bothersome. Such a subtle thing as to what appeals to us and what does not. Actually, her looks kind of remind me of Hitler's ideal frau even though she is not German.

I feel the same way, tried to like her but couldn't that much. Except for me, she always seemed too much of a pouty teen when she was young. I know she can't help the way her face and lips are for the most part, but there's something pouty about her face, esp. when young.

Also, her eyebrows always seem bushy to me. And, that's a turn-off.

Of course, non of this means that she's a bad actress or that her films aren't great. But, I certainly don't care for her looks, somehow. Funny, cause when just glancing at a photo, I mostly like her. But, when watching her, she rubs me wrong. Yes, like you, there's a subtlety of a certain something---even the shape of her nose--- that gets me. I also think that of Swedish actresses, Garbo had the better voice and was better overall. But, that's another post, entirely.

Please excuse typos/funny wording; I use speech-recognition that doesn't always recognize!

Ingrid probably would have liked you both though.

Well, to each his/her own, but personally I can see why the Robert Jordan character would fall in love with her in For Whom the Bell Tolls. Have you checked out that movie yet?

I tell you one thing I've checked out For Whom The Bells Tolls many times. Her performance was outstanding but, the way she looked with her hair cut that way was breathtaking I'am 76yrs old and can still see that beautiful image of her in my mind.

I've decided to start "oldies" marathon, and For Whom the Bell Tolls will be the first on my list.
Thanks

I never cared for that film, which bored me to death and Bergman just wasn't convincing as Maria. That, along with Joan of Arc, is my least favorite of her Oscar nominated performances. The only great thing about that movie was the SupportingActress winner, A something. Shame on me, I don't even know her name. But I also saw her in an equally great performance in a much better movie The Mourning Becomes Electra with Rosalind Russell.

I agree. She was also, my mom's favorite actress and so I too, was interested in liking her but I just find her obnoxious. She over acted in Gaslight and Casablanca is way overrated. I like all of the male actors in CB but Ingrid Bergman just doesn't do it for me.

I feel exactly the same Winter23. My mother took me to all of her films when I was a kid, in fact I think For Whom the Bell Tolls could have been one of the first films that I ever saw, I was five years old. I remember seeing all those forties films at the time of their release, Notorious, Under Capricorn, and the boring Stromboli. I also saw Anastasia, Indiscreet, and The Inn of the Sixth Happiness, and she still left me totally cold, and always has.
