She was voted the most popular actress in 1948.

She was by very long odds my own favorite actress of all time... Millions of American movie fans adored and idolized her. Not only was her interpretation magnificent beyond description, but her home life was ideal, where she lived quietly and happily with her devoted little family. She was a sweet and understanding person with an attractive personality which captivated everyone on and off the screen. God has been very good to Ingrid Bergman. No one can reflect upon her sudden plunge from the highest pinnacle of respect to the gutter without feeling that she is the victim of some kind of hypnotic influence: the vile and unspeakable Rossellini. RKO publicity brazenly termed Rossellini "inspired." If this swine is inspired, he is inspired by the devil. Women have moved in and out of this treacherous viper's life in a never-ending stream. When Rossellini, the love pirate, returned home to Rome smirking over his conquest, it was not Mrs. Lindstrom's scalp which hung from the conquering hero's belt - it was her very soul. The soul of Hollywood's greatest star. When a money-mad homewrecker like Rossellini gets caught red-handed in a bedroom raid of this kind and gets shot like the dog he is, the unwritten law in America usually turns the slayer loose with a generous pat on the back. That is what we here think of such degenerates.

I cannot think of another actress in the history of American Cinema that was hugely adored by tens of millions of fans, highly respected by critics and peers at the same time.
