THINKING OF INGRID

Mainly because there have been two of her films on TV today GASLIGHT and DOCTOR JEKYLL AND MR HYDE and she was excellent in both of them. On this site I see there are topics on whether she was the best ever actress or most beautiful does it really matter? Suffice it to say she won three oscars and was very beautiful a rare combination the best ever is surely subjective! What does matter however is that she was as lovely inside as she was on the outside I have never read of another actor saying anything different they adored her as much as the general public. I remember her appearing in the west end in the play WATERS OF THE MOON and her co star WENDY HILLIER was gushing in her praise of Ingrid as a lovely person as is everyone who worked with her. I have seen her interviews on British chat shows of the seventies and she is kindly and intelligent even if she may have been sick to death of talking of HUMPHREY BOGART and CASABLANCA. I hasten to add I have no idea if she was ever tired of the same questions if she was it never showed. But if there is any doubt as to what a truly lovely woman she was check her acceptance speech for winning an Oscar for ORIENT EXPRESS. Ingrid apologies to Valentina Cortese who she thinks should have won and is magnificent in her humble acceptance now that is class! You can see it on you tube

She was the biggest star in Hollywood in the 40s (most bankable) and a great actress as well. She had a long lasting career that was only matched by Hepburn in terms of longevity and quality. Then she is the only big star in Hollywood history that truly had an international career, excelling on the stage and small TV screen besides the silver screen.

And there is no other super star from Hollywood that worked with so many 1st class auteurs as she did: Hitch, Cukor, Rosselini, Renoir, Lumet, Bergman. She will be forever remembered for Casablanca and Notorious. Yet she also starred in the first modern film Journey to Itsly as hailed by Bazan and the influential New Wave auteurs.
