I saw Autumn Sonata last night and WOW! I was blown away.
Ingmar Bergman, Ingrid Bergman and Liv Ullman! What a combo.
It's unpleasant to watch at times. It's just a little too raw. The daughter (Ullman) lets her mother (Bergman) have it! And Bergman just shows the pain and the guilt on her face and in every movement.
The other daughter was also incredible.
I hesitated to watch it because I don't always have good experiences with Ingmar Bergman's films made after the mid-1960s (except for The Magic Flute and Fanny and Alexander). I love the earlier films and I've seen a bunch of them. But I didn't like Persona or Hour of the Wolf.
I will definitely have to see more of the later films. I've never seen Cries and Whispers or Scenes from a Marriage.
Janet! Donkeys!
