Great films of the last ten years

What are the films that refute the many "hollywood not as good as the good old days" threads?
I want it to be true that its just rose tinted nostalgia and actually filmsd are as good as they used to be but im struggling to think of examples.

... have just been googling for an example to get us started but sadly found just this list
"Best films of the 2020s"
https://www.imdb.com/list/ls096094221/

which seems to be a bunch of decidedly mediocre stuff most of which admittedly i havent seen

Whats been "really good" in the last ten years - as opposed to quirky different , thinking mans movie or summer blockbuster pap.

wheres the Ghostbusters ? The goonies ? Platoon ? Pulp Fiction?
Films that define a generation ?

Thanks for your input and keeping this thread the fascinating interesting insightful discussion that its been, over the six mins since it started.

You're welcome. Expect the silence to drag out as nobody can think of a great film.

You’ll get a few suggestions but none will be ‘great’ on reflection.

yep , i suspect you're right , sadly

A quick glance at the list you linked to reveals that quite a number of the films included are not Hollywood movies. Which possibly tells its own story.

There is a whole world of cinema outside 'The Big Five' -- although I do understand that their marketing power might give a different impression to very casual film fans.

There's like an epidemic of "best of" lists, best of this year or that year, best of this or that genre and so one, only logic that almost all of these lists either list the same things or only mediocre stuff.
To my mind the last 10 years have mostly been attempts to reboot old stuff, because Hollywood is still mostly stuck in the old ways rather than following the trends viewers want to move to, they came up with more and more remakes of movies or series, they even resurrected Schwarzenegger.
Logic consequence has been that the last 10 years have been a huge shift, away from the same old same old Hollywood stuff, towards independent productions with new content, but then these independent productions are all very low budget, amateurish actors and weak storylines, mostly webseries produced for YT, one can tell there's potential, but so far the end result isn't convincing.

One thing that really stood out for me wasn't even a movie but a documentary produced by Netflix, "A Secret Love".

Well, I would have said "Whiplash" but in fact, I think it just misses.

Released in 2014 one believes.

Ok, I've got three released in the last ten years. Great may be too strong. They'd fall into the "Hey, this was really good" category..

This is off the top of my head (in terms of release dates)....

"Sound of Metal" 2020

"The Accountant" 2016

"Diane" 2018

This last one, it's European. I thought it was fantastic, but realistically - you'd have to be interested in WW2 to appreciate it...

"Land of Mine" 2016

Can't think of anything else. The rest (in terms of movies one liked) would fall into the "It's worth a look" category.

The Batman
The Northman
Killers of the Flower Moon
The Killer
Annihilation
Wind River
Detroit
Dunkirk

I've seen "Annihilation" . I'd say it was average at best , and only tolerated by sci fi fans.
BUT , thats just my opinion obviously ...
I'll read up on the others

Maybe 1917.

There's no great films in the last 10 years.

I would say 3 Billboards was maybe the best movie for me it teeters on greatness for me (great acting and themes presented very well, but just a tiny bit clunky in parts) and a lot of people seem to like The Banshees of Inisheeren from the same director but I found that very disappointing.

they both look pretty good 👍

Even though it's a superhero film, in my humble opinion, Avengers: Infinity War (2018) is the perfect comic book film. It's sublime.
