Here I Sit Waiting For Milton To Visit!

I evacuated to my Grandson’s home who lives outside of Orlando. He & wife live in a safer home. Villa like sandwiched between 2 other units. Less than 24 hours away is a Cat 5 storm which will give us strong life threatening hurricane force winds (possibly a Cat 2) across all of Central Florida, from coast to coast. As long as I’ve lived in Central Florida I’ve never had to evacuate. Donna (1960) gave us over 100 mph gusts, Charlie (2004) 74 mph gusts, Orlando north of us got 100 mph gusts, but none were from storm surge.

I was fortunate as I didn’t have to evacuate from Tampa although I do live 55 miles due east off I-4. I drove a secondary road going north. The people who were evacuating from the west coast got caught up in a nightmare! Sitting for hours, vehicles had to be pushed off the roads (out of gas!), walking their dogs, etc. The road shoulders were opened for traffic which gave 5 lanes instead of 3, only to find no rooms. But, for the life of me I cannot understand why people don’t evacuate when instructed to do so because of storm surge. Emergency Management in Tampa succinctly said “If you don’t evacuate…YOU WILL DIE.” And, die they will. Florida had 11 deaths from Helene
(Sept. 26, 2024) less than 2 weeks ago. 9 died from mandatory evacuated areas. This is fresh, current news, yet there are some, stupid is as stupid does, who say they won’t evacuate from this deadly powerful storm, Milton. They were told to write their names & Social Security numbers on themselves in order to be identified!

“Milton's wind field is expected to grow considerably in size while it moves across Florida.
This is a very serious situation and residents in Florida should closely follow orders from their local
emergency management officials. Evacuations and other preparations should be rushed to completion. Milton has the potential to be one of the most destructive hurricanes on record for west-central Florida.”

It is 12 noon and starting to get darker outside. Milton is on his way…

Good luck. Be safe and don't forget to return his stapler.

Signed, million man.

reply

I continue to forget returning things. I have an excuse. “It’s an age thing.” 🙄🤭

reply

I hope you and your family will be safe. It's good you evacuated to somewhere safer.

reply

Thank you. I don’t have empathy for those who defied orders and succumbed, but for their kids and animals if they died.

Was this recent? If so, the beginning of storm surge.

Happening Now

Well, folks this is what is known as storm surge. Not one huge wave, but the sea covering the land! When I last looked at this 5 hrs ago the water was at the steps. Now take a look see. Continue to check the link as Milton batters the coast.

Thanks much, TheHardSell. I wish you could Hard Sell to numbskulls who won’t heed mandatory evacuation!

A few guys where out there surfing 60 min ago! Crazy.

Undertows are quite prevalent in waters such as these. I was surf fishing with my husband and in ankle deep water when I got caught in one. It was stronger than me and pulling me out. My husband saw the look on my face when the rod & reel went flying! He had to rescue me. I’ve always wondered if he wished he had rescued his expensive rod & reel instead. 🤭

Sorry, but the post by MyLordBebo on X. is one I take with a grain of salt.

I would have just claimed on the life insurance 🤷‍♂️

reply

Thanks a whole hell of a lot! For the laugh! 😅😂🤣 😘

reply

Wishing you well.

Maybe hide in a well.

But make sure you let Lassie know where you are in case you get stuck.

reply

I may be wrong, but I don’t think we have open wells in Florida, the type where you lower a bucket to get water. We have sinkholes which go to the aquifer. Not too long ago a man was sleeping and his house collapsed into a sinkhole. They couldn’t get the poor guy out. Assumed he went into the aquifer. I hope he died quickly for his sake.

reply

Be safe !

Wishingyou and your family well.

Thank you Mod 5 who is a part of our great, unpaid Mod Squad!

I've been watch hing videos about this. One live cam has multiple people stood near a beach wall. The waves are coming over and getting bigger, and they're just staying there like it's nothing.

And the thing about identifying yourself is scary af. I hope you and your family stay safe. Keep us updated if your Internet stays up 🫂

reply

Thanks for the good wishes. As far as those nitwits standing near a beach wall…they won’t be there for long. I swear I believe people who are ignorant about storm surge believe it’s just a big wave akin to a surfing wave. We are attempting to get through their thick skulls…no, it’s not a huge wave over and done with. IT’s THE DAMN OCEAN COMING IN AND COVERING MORE LAND!!

reply

Sorry if this is a stupid question, but with flooding, does that increase the risk of alligators in urban areas?

So along with dealing with flood damage, you need to be on the look out for snakes and alligators too?

reply

NOT a stupid question. To answer…you betcha! Plus fire ants. Several years ago a nursing home resident was stung to death by fire ants! They form like a raft and float. Mean, smart, devil like creatures! Also, crocodiles.

Then there are the pythons which are not indigenous to Florida. The following is a horror story:

reply

Fire ants are way worse than gators. If you get a raft of fire ants on you, you’ll be miserable for days. It’s crazy how they drown all the ones on the bottom. Alligators are just trying to get out of your way.

Be safe!!!

reply

They kill wildlife and livestock. They are mean carnivorous devils!

reply

😳

Reading that has made me greatful that I live on a little cold island! I think the worst things we have are ticks and gnats.

Just read up about those ants on wiki, they sound nasty.

reply

Our wildlife and weather is rubbish compared to virtually everywhere else.

reply

Best wishes. Keep safe. I wonder how many people go beneath ground.

reply

Thanks for the best wishes!

”I wonder how many people go beneath ground.”

Maybe when they die due to not taking heed to evacuation orders?

”Basements are not common in Florida due to a combination of factors including the high water table, flat terrain, and warm and humid climate. While there may be exceptions in certain areas, most homes in Florida do not have basements.”

The terrain in North Florida may permit them in certain areas.

reply

Thanks for the info. All the best.

We are now starting to get the rain, feeder bands & winds from Milton slamming against the windows. He hasn’t made landfall.
