High Quality Lesser Watched TV series

Babylon Berlin: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HAn3RXeCrLg&t=26s

A political/crime noir set in 1920s Weimar Germany a few years to the rise of the Nazis - one of the most fascinating historical periods of the 20th century.

Warrior: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=79rtcCnaeyo

A Bruce Lee inspired martial arts/gangster period drama set in 1870s San Francisco dealing with the issues of Chinese immigration to the city. Pretty fictionalised.

Balkan Shadows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjvemFdrbRk&t=34s

A bit rough around the edges, but a noir period drama set in 1930s Yugoslavia (or now modern Serbia). Similar to Babylon Berlin.

Counterpart: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JRuaNHLp6OU

A sci-fi espionage series set in an alternative present where the earth split into two worlds in two different universes in the 1980s, separated by a tunnel. Every single person alive in the 1980s was effectively cloned, or born in two separate worlds as they diverged.

I'd add a few Korean ones too, but man the trailers for them are bad: Arthdal Chronicles and Happiness.

Open Range on Amazon is all right. Made by someone who seemed to really love Twin Peaks and Westerns.

reply

Outer Range. Yeah. Unfortunately it got cancelled.

reply

Did it? They made a second season. I haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I know it almost didn't get a second season.

reply

Yeah, third season was cancelled.

reply

I'll have to watch second season before deciding whether I'm bothered by that. After the first season, I felt like this could go totally off the rails and turn into total nonsense. Or they could bring it all together and end up being pretty cool.

reply

It was okay. The first season was better-developed.

reply

Warrior is great.

Signed, million man

reply

Travellers - Sci-Fi.

reply

Is that episodic or serialised? I had heard it has a 'monster of the week' type writing style.

reply

Episodic - I’m a real sci-fi lover and this was surprisingly good.

reply

Did you ever watch Farscape?

reply

No I haven’t.

reply

Probably a must for a sci-fi fan. It's a mixture of episodic and serialised.

I'd also ask: Battlestar Galactica, or The Expanse?

reply

I’m going to finish off the current season of Star Trek: Discovery and Brave New Worlds, having caught up on Nu-Nu-Who and I will watch Farscape after the new season of The Umbrella Academy.

I don’t have Amazon Prime (yet), so haven’t seen The Expanse, but when I do I’ll be watching The Man In The High Castle and The Boys first.

Battlestar was a firm favourite with me.

reply

I really like the show; I just rewatched it a few weeks ago.

reply

I was surfing Netflix and I thought I’d give it a try - I’m glad I did.

reply

One of these days I have to get around to watching 'The Prisoner'
