Referencing real world brands in fiction (such as McDonald's)

I've written and will continue to write several works of fiction (modern romantic comedy, modern action, and futuristic sci-fi/action) that references real world brands such as McDonald's.

What do you think of this? Would this be good or should I substitute the brand names with my own invented ones?

reply

I was surprised the Big Bang used the CheeseCake Factory, instead of inventing a fake restaurant.

reply

Ah cool. That is surprising...wonder if they had to get permission?

reply

Maybe The Cheesecake factory paid them for the advertising.

reply

Yeah, maybe that too.

reply

I don't see why you shouldn't use real brands.

reply

Yeah, it would be interesting or funny to envision a future when humanity brings its brands such as McDonald's to outer space and other planets...

reply

2001 featured Hilton and Pan Am.

I Googled--using brand names in fiction---and got lots of hits. Interesting.

reply

Using real brand names like McDonalds lends to realism. Parody names would be used for satire.

reply

It depends. If writing is just a hobby, no big deal, but if you want to get it published, there could be some legal entanglements involved. Either way, never stop writing!

reply

Thanks for the input!

Just make shit up, ‘Super Slurps’ or
‘Big Patties’ for instance.

If your book doesn’t sell start a fast food joint.

You’ll make money either way👍

reply

Seinfeld often used real brands because they thought showing fake brands made the scenes more awkward.

There is actually a movie from the 90s with Paul Reiser and Amy Brenneman that takes place largely at a McDonalds.
