What do you think of Buddhism?

I've researched it over the last 6 months. It seems attractive to me, so I wanna know your take.

To the newbie, Buddhism is not about blind worship but exploring a method of teachings. These lessons come from a guy who figured it all out after many mistakes. They were not flawless, they had to persevere.

Here are the pros:
• No gods: you think for yourself. You can be critical of the Buddha. (In fact, it's encouraged.)
• You don't require being a monk. You can be a "layperson", most Buddhists are.
• It's deeply technical. It is only about the correct operation of a human being to its core.
• It respects other faiths, such as Judaism and Hinduism. There's never been a Buddhist war.

Here are the cons:
• Many canons (writings) seem ridiculous. Like the Buddha being able to make magic spells, convert people instantly, etc.
• There's a lot of stupid music and "prayer". DONG.. DONG.. DONG.....
• Many monks seem like idiots. They even call each other idiots. (That's allowed.)
• There is a huge amount of superstition and corruption.

Also, there is little intrigue into the advantages of suffering. This is my deepest problem. The central idea of Buddhism is not to achieve enlightenment, but to eliminate suffering. Yet suffering is not an utterly negative experience: it is required for any kind of achievement, including reaching to Buddhism. And if you "desire" for Buddhism, how can that be, when the Buddha is explicit that desire is the cause of suffering?

Thoughts on this extremely important matter please.

A boring waste of time and just one more fake religion that came out of Asia. People only turned to it in the 60s and 70s because they had rejected the mostly Christian, boring Americana culture they grew up with and liked following a religion that let them take drugs and chill out.

reply

What an ignorant and disrespectful take. Good thing your opinion doesn't matter, toots!

reply

lol

reply

Nor does yours.

reply

I get the 70s movement thing, but most monks do not take drugs. The fifth precepts specifically states to avoid substances. It's a less serious instruction in Buddhism, but the point is that chemical abuse clouds the mind and is destructive to other teachings.

reply

Yeah, but remember, Hippies will use any excuse to get high, including joining a religion they know very little about.

reply

Why would hippies use Buddhism as an excuse to get high when that's not even part of the religion?

reply

What makes your religion any less false than the Asian ones? Simple answer. Nothing.
I'm happy Christianity is fading away in the west.

reply

You just made the Prince of Darkness very happy with that statement.

reply

Folk like yourself love to be all about "facts and logic" until it comes to your religion, then you are more than happy to believe fairy tale nonsense for which there is zero evidence, except some book that savages wrote centuries ago.

reply

No rebuttal? Oh well, looks like I've won this argument. It's not hard for an atheist to defeat a Christian in a debate.

reply

ARE YOU A SMALL CHILD?

reply

In a long enough time line, Christianity triumphs.

reply

Not if I can help it.

reply

Good luck!

reply

"You just made the Prince of Darkness very happy with that statement."

I just asked Ozzy, and he said he's not really all that happy. Then he said "It's buwamba duffle nuggs, ebbilty voah kaminga, yaknow? SHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH-IIIIIIIIIIIINNNNNNNNNNN!"

reply

Maybe it's trendy, but it's no faker than christianity or the other abrahamic religions. Maybe it's time to think for yourself. It's 2023. Similar to people using centuries old economists for TODAYS problems..

But I actually don't believe in religion.
Jesus = Santa Clause = Santos Clause

It's about time adults thought for themselves. Sometimes there are 7 sides to an issue.

reply

What the hell are you talking about guy

reply

later, "new" user

reply

Complete BS.

reply

I don't know much about Buddhism, but it seems like one of the more peaceful religions out of the major players.

reply

I generally respect other people's religions, religion is not a good reason to start a fight. Jesus is my homeboy and I'll ride and die with my Bro but if you are a Buddhist, Jew, Mormon, Amish type or whatever it's all good. I do find the Scientologists to be a bit scary and shady, I avoid that bunch.

reply

Scientology is really bizarre. Seems like a thing for rich movie actors who want to avoid Evangelicalism.

reply

As an atheist, I think a lot of it - its a religion pretty much without doctrine, metaphysics or mythology, at least on the Zen line.

Kind of surprised at the harsh takes I'm seeing here. There is very little that I can see to object to about it - being mindful, quieting the tumult of chaotic thought, taking the time.

I don't practice much, but that's mainly because I'm lazy & self-indulgent.

reply

Living in the here and now is an essential teaching of the religion. It's not quite right to say there's no doctrine or mythology, but it may be described as aggressively minimalist.

You've got to appreciate this is one of the oldest beliefs on the planet and has experienced many persecutions, notably the vile policy to be completely exterminated in Cambodia (Pol Pot). 50 years later it's the official religion of the country. In other words, it can take a little harsh language.

reply

What would be some of the doctrine or mythology ? If you'd care to touch on some of them briefly, that would be great - I'd like to know. I'm guessing they surround the cosmology associated w/ rebirth, rather than the minute articles of faith of a Christian/Jew/Muslim/etc.

reply

The 4 noble truths, the 8 precepts, the 5 hinderings, etc: that would be the essential doctrine. The sutras go into way more depth if you want to dig through books.

The truths are the simplest and by far the most important. It is the teaching that says:
• Life feels like a pile of shit, doesn't it.
• It feels like shit because you wished it could be better.
• There's a way to sort all this shit out.
• Follow these instructions, idiot, and you won't feel like shit anymore.

It's really important to understand that Buddhism is not about achieving enlightenment, going to Nirvana and living happily ever after. That is not the point at all. We are all stuck here and will be reborn endlessly. Most of us that is.

There's no real heaven or hell in the belief. There is kamma, but that's not cosmic justice. Other religions promise a glorious afterlife. Here we're eternally in our lives and afterlives. It doesn't even sound like much of a deal.

The most essential thing to understand about Buddhism is eliminating suffering. Not about going to a magical spiritual place, not about achievement, not about being reborn into a better world. The point is that we must eliminate suffering. That's it. No heavens, no hells, no eternal bliss. Just, no more suffering. And if you follow the path of the Buddha, they say, you'll experience no more suffering. Suddenly that seems like a good deal.

reply

Beautiful. Thank you.

reply

I like the fact that you don’t get many Buddhist suicide bombers.

reply

Fair point.
We don't see a a bunch of Buddhist guys murdering doctors and nurses at health clinics.

reply

Aum Shinrikyo and the 969 Movement are Buddhist terrorist groups. Ashin Wirathu is a monk who has spent a decade in prison for advocating violence.

reply

False religion.

reply

Ok, chief.

reply

No worries, "chief".
