Do the Hollywood people specifically dislike cats?

A huge number of Hollywood movies contain either seemingly
pointless and distasteful cat jokes or cats getting hurt.

Example, illustrative:

Example movies:
388 Arletta Avenue (2011)
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation (1989)
Straw Dogs (1971)
Her (2013)
The Killing Kind (1973)
Gummo (1997)
Sleepwalkers (1992)
Castle Freak (1995)
Slaughterhouse (1987)
Bad Boy Bubby (1993)
Penthouse North (2013)
976-EVIL (1988)
Midnight Express (1978)
The Autopsy of Jane Doe (2016)
Suburbia (1983)
Sex Ed (2014)
The Mentalist (2008–2015) S5 E21
Raising Hope (2010–2014) S4 E3

Pet sematary.

Well it's a scientifically proven fact that cats are jerks and it only makes sense that movies, which usually depict real life accurately, would depict the true nature of cats.

And for those science deniers out there, here's just one example, out of millions:

Science of the Muppets.

reply

I'm confused, are you a Science-Denier or a Science-Believer?

I can drop cat truth videos all day:

I hate cats i never understand why people like them. They’re lazy and don’t really have a sentient connection to humans like dogs do. With the exception of the poodle and chihuahua, dogs are the superior animal.

reply

Your brain has obviously not been corrupted by cat pee and you can see the truth!

Although, sometimes kittens are adorable.

reply

Dogs eat shit.

reply

Lazy=low maintenance

don’t really have a sentient connection to humans like dogs do.

That couldn’t be further from the truth. You just don’t know how to be gentle and patient. Dogs are draining with their dependence on others to entertain and lead them.

reply

lazy = not useful
connection = obedient

reply

Maybe. It would be interesting if there was an experiment to see which animal is better at being self sufficient.

reply

Mexico has followed this trend in the past, as well.

And the present: The Shape of Water (2017)

Blofield and his white cat.

Cats are good asshole detectors. Not the cats themselves, what do they know, but any human who rants about how much they hate cats is guaranteed to be an asshole! I'm okay with people who aren't into cats, or who don't understand them, but anyone who expresses an irrational hatred for cats is going to be absolute scum.

Hollywood is, of course, full of human scum.

reply

That makes sense, good points.

reply

It's fine to dislike cats, but if you were gonna mention in a conversation that you don't like dogs you may as well just say that you touch kids. The reaction is about the same.

The only film in your list that I remembered the cat was "Vacation." I also vaguely remember "Breakfast at Tiffany's" where the dude tossed a cat out of the car into the rain...

reply

I think Cats are just Misunderstood. Ripley had a Cat in Alien who wasn't portrayed negatively. I always wanted to see the Key and Peele movie "Keanu" from a few years back but haven't gotten around to it as the whole plot revolved around a kidnapped cat.

Nah, I think they're just prone to overusing a joke or trope. Plenty of positive cat representation, from Homeward Bound to A Streetcat Named Bob.

One impressive overuse in this case.

reply

Impressive, I don't know, but weird and sadistic certainly. But Hollywood loves to repeat itself.

reply

Maybe they take pleasure in offending all the "crazy cat ladies", who have nothing else to do, than watch their crap...

reply

Idk, it's usually pretty randomly inserted so it's not like the crazy cat ladies would even see it.
