Grandfather was a soldier in WW1. He got shot in North Africa by a Berber in a skirmish and was seriously wounded, fucking ragheads ! My father and uncles were in the Army in WW2 though I don't know the gory details.

curious what is the difference between a grandpa and a grandad? i always thought they are the same thing?

reply

They both mean grandfather, but granddad was my dad's-dad and grandpa is my mum's dad.

reply

ahhh

reply

Grandparents often pick what they want to be called. Mine were Pop and Nono.

Grandpa on my moms side fought and was shot in WW2 while fighting against Soviet Union on the side of the Nazi's. He was one of those Ukrainian Nazis.

My dad was in the Yugoslavian army before marrying a morbidly obese American woman and moving to USA. he has a funny joke about his military service.

"I joined the army for three reasons,
1. I love my country
2. I am a patriot
3. They forced me to go"

My dad's mom was in the WAVES. She was in Washington, DC during WWII, doing office work.
His dad was in the army during WWII, but I have no idea what he did. He never talked about it.
My mom's dad lied about his age to get into the military when he was a year too young. His birth certificate was destroyed in a fire. He looks like a kid in the picture I saw of him in uniform. He was stationed in Alaska during the last year of the war.

My dad would have gone to Vietnam, but his foot was crushed in a motorcycle accident when he was a teenager.

MY GRANDFATHER SERVED IN WWII...HE WAS A JAPANESE POW FOR ALMOST TWO YEARS AND RECEIEVED THE PURPLE HEART AFTER RECEIVING A BACK FULL OF SCHRAPNEL.

MY FATHER WAS A DRAFT DODGING HIPPIE WHO ATTENDED WOODSTOCK AND NEVER REALLY LEFT.

On the male side of my lineage, We participated in all the modern wars (for America). Not sure about the Revolutionary or Civil War stuff. Right up to my dad in Nam. I pretty much killed that trend off. Nobody from my mother's side was ever in the military. I didn't have kids. Buck pretty much stops here. We got a few trunks of gnarly old war memorabilia in the attic.
