I don’t get the IMDB ‘Top 500 Character Actors’ list. It’s far too inclusive, there are a ton of lead actors on that list.
To me, when I hear ‘character actor’ I always think of a performer that frequently plays a mob guy or a grizzled cop or the goofy best friend in a rom-com. You know, the sort of actor you can’t quite name but you recognize and like. They have ‘a type’ of role that they excel at playing.
Steve Buschemi is an interesting case. He seemed to usually play an oddball type but he became a legit household name and Star.
I feel like ‘character actor’ is a difficult term to pin down.

Very good movie, Lou Gossett Jr. and Dennis Quaid were the leads, it’s been compared to a sort of ‘Hell In The Pacific’ in outer space by several movie critics.
