Here’s a picture of me at the last race meet before Covid.

Some of you may know that I race cars in a purely amateur capacity (honestly, even the semi-pro guys leave me in a cloud of dust, never mind the pros). Because I lived in America for a while, I tend to be the ‘go to’ guy for the left hand drive cars (British cars are right hand drive).

The event was held at one of the Car Chase Hero circuits, where they have Track Day Experiences, so all the necessary facilities were in house. I had just walked the track and was heading to the pits to get changed when the missus went ‘click’ (probably for insurance purposes, lol).

I thought the Speed Buggy t-shirt was appropriate and in my right hand is my driver’s laminate.

I drove a left hand drive AC Cobra and the brakes were so spongey that I had to brake about a quarter of a mile before each bend for fear of shooting off the track. It was a fun ride!

I also got to race a ‘competition ready’ Lamborghini Hurican. I remember going down the back straight thinking, ‘Blimey! This can shift!’ It was an easy win - the rest of the field didn’t really have a chance.

I thought this was a capjourneyperson post at first.

Anyway, is there are prize money and do you have any trophies?

reply

I thought the same too.

That's what I also thought. I was thinking to myself, "I don't remember ever going to a race meet."

reply

It was definitely me.

reply

Ha😄

reply

No money - it’s more exhibition racing. I do have a few trophies in a drawer somewhere; it’s not like I’ve won anything important.

Looking good!

I was about 53 at the time.

Cool pic.

If you consider spongy brakes a fun ride, you must be somewhat of an adrenaline junkie! 😁 I can sort of relate. I once had a brake line on my cab snap, causing a sudden, complete loss of brakes. It had been due to hitting a chuckhole in the pavement earlier that night during a spring thaw. I had just returned a soldier to his barracks in the middle of the night and was returning to town. The military base was located on top of a long, huge hill and it was at that spot where the brake failure occurred (wouldn't you know it?). All I could do was coast and navigate the curves all the way down, plus alert my dispatcher of what had just happened. Coming off that hill successfully was a major relief. I then coasted at a snail's pace through another base and then several miles more back into town, my depot, and finally, my parking spot.😅 My saving grace during that mini ordeal was, as I said, it was the middle of the night and there was very little traffic on the roads. All's well that ends well.

Thanks!

Jeez! You were lucky!

I have 3 rules when I get behind the wheel: -
Respect the car.
Respect the track.
Don’t get killed.

I knew straight away that I wasn’t going to set any records with the spongey brakes, so just ensured I enjoyed the thrill of driving such an iconic car.

Thanks, I moisturise, lol.

Nice shades. Better than mines.

reply

Thanks! I’ve got about half a dozen prescription Ray-Bans.

MY TWO FAVORITE PEOPLE EVER...OTHER THAN MY DAUGHTER...BOTH HAD RACING IN THEIR BLOOD AND THEIR BONES...PAUL NEWMAN & STEVE MCQUEEN...YOU ARE ALSO ONE OF MY FAVORITE PEOPLE...IT IS FITTING THAT YOU ALSO LEAVE IT ALL OUT ON THE TRACK.

reply

Thanks! I can't describe the thrill of becoming one with the machine, pushing it to the limits, all your senses in overdrive - it’s a massive adrenaline rush!

reply

Looking good but why do you have vampire fangs?

reply

Probably for the same reason I always wear prescription Ray-Bans in every photo, lol.

reply

🤣

reply

Sounds fun to watch a race at the track but I’d be too scared to be in it!

reply

It’s a total adrenaline rush 🏎️
