Retirement.

At what age do you retire?

Here in the UK its 68, to old in my opinion.

Edit, you can retire when you like if you can afford to, 68 is when the government give you about £700 ish a month.

reply

$700 a month?
That's pretty stingy, and 68 is pretty old.
But you do get free health care, until the Tories screw it up and kill it

I will be out in about five and a half years at age 55. I have a TDA and a decent pension all lined up.

I’ll still work though for walking around money, maybe a gig at a small hardware store or a bait shop. It’s good to have somewhere to be and a purpose.

reply

I’m 55 and could retire if I wanted to, however…….

reply

I hear you.
It’s good to stay in the mix, make a few bucks and keep busy I suppose.

CALL ME IN SIX YEARS...I HAVE SOME "JOBS" YOU CAN PERFORM FOR CASH. NOEMOJI

reply

This job offer sounds terrifying!

reply

I'm terrified that he had to specify "perform for cash". It should go without saying that someone is going to get paid.

reply

I’m just going to stay here on the East Coast where everyone is totally normal😄

If you love what you do, there is no reason to ever retire, provided you are healthy. But I imagine that is not most people.

If you don't particularly love your career/job, then I say retire when you feel you can afford it. I don't think one should be dependent on the government for their retirement. Not a recipe for happiness. I'm not arguing against Social Security, just saying it was intended as a supplement, not one's entire retirement plan.

In the US, you retire when you can afford to, which means "never" for some people.

I'm going to be over 70 when I retire, at best.

reply

I retired when I was 70, which was always my plan. I loved my job - I worked from home and had wonderful perks/benefits, but financially, it made sense for me to retire - my pension was frozen at age 65 and I couldn't touch it until I retired, so no double dipping and at 70, I received max SS.

I had always planned on doing something else but then Covid hit and that changed things.

I do a little consulting work and volunteer 2 mornings each week, which I enjoy. No way could I ever just be home and do nothing.

Not everyone who continues to work does it because of the money.
