Was Robin Hood a hero?
And a good man overall? π§
shareIt's unlikely he was a real person. Historians have their doubts.
If it's true that there was someone who "robbed from the rich to give to the poor " I would consider that admirable, especially when there have been many examples throughout history of the rich gaining their wealth through exploitation of those less fortunate.
I am in a position that I always thought he was a fictional character.
But even so, to those who know him, was he always a good, noble man etc?
I think he originated in the book Ivanhoe.
shareNo, Robin Hood stories far older than "Ivanhoe", which BTW is a fun book by 19th century standards. Apparently the legend of Robin Hood, the decent bandit who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor, has been around since the Medieval Era, if not longer. The legend probably originated as a peasant's fantasy, the dream of being a badass outlaw who answered to none... but still a good guy.
It's possible that "Ivanhoe" was what permanently tied the old legends to the era of King Richard I and Prince John, but I'm no expert.
Part fictional part real life there was someone who lived in a wood in a place called Newmillerdam in Wakefield West Yorkshire, which is about 45 miles from Sherwood Forest and his name was Robert Hode
shareThere is an episode of the Andy Griffith Show where they debate this a bit.
shareWhat do they say?
shareThe episode is called βOpie and his Merry Menβ. Opie and his friends run into a hobo that freeloads off of them by getting them to steal food for him. There is a part where Opie asks his dad about Robin Hood and whether it is OK to steal from the rich to give to the poor and it causes an argument between Barney and Andy. If I remember correctly Barney is bothered by the Sheriff of Nottingham being seen as a bad guy. I canβt remember everything exactly.
shareSo basically then they were polarized on the issue, yes?
shareIf the stories are correct in asserting that he was robbing from rich people who were essentially robbing poor and middle class people by taxing them unfair amounts, he was a hero to return money that was rightfully theirs to begin with.
shareHe was one of our childhood heroes!
100% noble
100% good
100% champion

Luckily nobody got killed with our little arrows. πΉβ
Steal from the rich and they will abuse the poor even more to recover what they lost
