We know Speed 2 was one of the worst sequel ever, and one of the reason is Keanu Reeves wasn't in it. But what other sequels that are actually decent even without having the main star returning?
Terminator 2 came to mind, but eventhough it had not the main protagonist the real star was Arnold anyway. Terminator 4 / Salvation was the one barely gets Arnold and it's actually not bad.
Predator 2 was the first film that sprung to mind. Do James Bond films count?

shareSame supporting cast other than Bond and Felix Leiter*, continuity was always messed up, the movies were never shot to the same order as Fleming had written them. The first movie was the 6th book, the second movie was the 5th book, Roger Moore’s first Bond movie was the 2nd 007 adventure written by Fleming!
But they were all sequels from Dr No to Die Another Day, Daniel Craig's Casino Royale was the first reboot.

Yes, Godfather II. One of the greatest sequel / prequel of all time! I heard Brando was supposed to be in the movie but he, being a diva, never showed up on the set.

I get that he had a deeply immersive style to his acting and could shed all of his tears on the floor but seriously, if you had a tight budget, a strict shooting schedule PLUS a major Studio nipping at your ass would you entrust the project to some stoned fat ass that never bothered to learn his lines and had aged horribly?
Brando was great early on but Bogart and Newman
we’re better and Eastwood was the first guy on the set and knew the whole scene…He became a fine Director because he understood not only the acting bits but the entire production.
I guess his school of acting was really revolutionary at the time, never before seen. He invented it.
In hindsight however, I think The Godfather II ended up better without Brando. It probably would look jarring to see Brando suddenly again after spending virtually the entire movie with DeNiro.
What I think is, he must have been a helluva theater actor, and that rep has carried him. Other than The Godfather I never really liked him.

I have seen that image before, it’s not just a slight to the Great Robert Duvall but a clear sign Of professional laziness on Brando’s part.

Telly Savalis, now there’s a guy who showed up on time and you could work with, he had a good reputation and handled his gigs properly.

"The Hunt for Red October (1990)" and its sequels.
I've never liked any of the Purge series (I think I've seen two of them but don't remember which ones,) so I'll take your word for it.
300: Rise of an Empire was decent I agree. It also has my favorite Bond girl Eva Green (in a crazy ridiculous sex-fight scene, no less) so it's definitely a plus. It just that Athenians could never be as cool and awesome as Spartans.
