how long would a computer last without virus protection?

i have no idea.

If you don't click random links and don't visit dodgy sites you may be alright for a while 🤷🏻‍♀️. I use a vpn and antivirus even though I'm only ever here, youtube or ebay lol.

Depends on what you are doing with the computer. If you are careful, you may not even need any virus protection.

reply

Depends on a lot of factors - OS, internet connectivity, whether or not it is using nested virtualization. An instance of Linux running through a Docker container stands a far better chance of avoiding viruses when exposed to the web than say, an unpatched version of Windows 95.

reply

The chances of coming across a virus in the wild these days that runs on Windows 95 are slim to none, especially since there aren't many websites out there that will even work with a web browser that runs on Windows 95.

reply

Scammed recently & the scammer said I needed extra virus protection, asked me for $300

reply

The oldest Windows PC I've kept around with no virus protection was over 5 years old with no issues. I have a 10 year old MacBook Pro with no virus protection. It's really not hard to do.

reply

If you have a Mac computer it is impossible to get a virus, also if you have a laptop/desktop computer with Windows 10 I gotta say that is also very unlikely you get a virus too because their protection has been on pair with MAC OS. Also if you need an antivirus I recommend you NOD32.

reply

i have windows 10, so i guess i don't need virus protection.

I've always used the free security suite supplied by Windows, whatever the Windows version. I've tried paid ones like MacAfee and Norton, and have always gone back to the free one that comes with Windows. Works for me.

reply

how do you activate the windows one?

reply

It should be activated by default?

"If you want to use Windows Security, uninstall all of your other antivirus programs and Windows Security will automatically turn on. You may be asked to restart your device." -- https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/turn-windows-security-on-or-off-888b963f-8dde-7952-a2e7-a2301879472d

But I don't think you have to uninstall after-market security (like MacAfee) in order to use Windows Security. You can enable one or the other (I think). I have Windows 11, and I don't recall the specific steps for Windows 10. Try Control Panel>System and Security>Security and Maintenance>Security>click drop down menu>see what it says

Or, Settings>whatever sounds like it will take you to Security or Defender

Or, in "Type here to search" box, type "security" or "defender"

reply

it's says it activated and no action necessary in the windows security section. i guess it works. i have one i pay for so i may have two.

reply

i have windows 10, so i guess i don't need virus protection.

Incorrect. Windows 10 has built-in virus protection: it's called Windows Defender. What you probably meant to say is with Windows 10 you don't need THIRD-PARTY virus protection.

reply

You need to check whether the computer comes with third-party antivirus or not (laptops usually come with one.) Windows 10 built-in antivirus (Windows Defender) would disable itself if it detects other antivirus program installed. Make sure it is enabled when you've removed the third-party one.

I wouldn’t say impossible, but incredibly unlikely, yes.

I have a Mac. what virus protection?

reply

Many people use Macs nowadays. It's no longer a bragging point.

reply

who said it was.........................................................................................its a literal 9 year old MacBook worth maybe 300$ if im lucky............................ are you okay?

reply

LOL. I also use a Mac. It's an 11" MacBook Air, (about 7 years old), and I bought it because of the size, instant on, and it sync's up with my iPhone, iPad, and Apple TV.

Also, I used PC's for work and thought it would be a good thing to learn how to operate a Mac.

reply

mines a MacBook Pro and 9 years old. still works great. I have my iMac dual booted with Mac OS and windows 11 its great. I can play my old games on PC and use macOS
