It’s not a movie, but the HBO series Oz is about as raw and rugged as prison stories get. Frankly, it does not have much of a narrative. Its sole purpose seemed to have been sadistic, at which it succeeded in spades. It’s available on streaming HBO. It ran for 6 seasons.
One caveat: there is a HUGELY annoying recurring character, an inmate in a wheelchair, who serves as a Greek chorus to this show that wanted to be a Classic tragedy but was actually torture porn. His character is smug, self-impressed and despicable.
