Movies that are truly timeless?

There are many movies that were amazing when they were released but 20-30 years down the line they age so badly that you wonder how you ever even liked that movie. For example: when movie "The Mummy" was released, it look so good to me and I am not just talking about the cinematography and VFX. Now it's just okay at best. What are some movies that are truly timeless that hold just as good or almost as good as they did when they were released?

reply

Well, it depends on what you are talking about, because if you compare any special effects from the past, they aren't going to hold up to what can be done today.

The original Terminator used stop motion but to me that is part of the appeal. It was great in 1984 and continues to be almost 40 years later.

Timeless moves have great story lines and acting and they rarely age badly.

Terminator 2 still looks good after more than 30 years. Batman Returns holds up well for a 30-year-old flick. Jurassic Park too for almost 30 years. Stargate doesn't look too shabby either.

Can't find 80s movies that still hold up tho'. Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade is maybeeee kinda hold up except for the rapid aging effect, that looks super janky now. But it's also from 1989 so at the later end of 80s anyway. BttF films look really dated today. My best bet is probably Aliens.

What about Lock Up, Red Heat, Code of Silence, Batman, The Package, Outland, Time Bandits, Venom, Sharky's Machine, Witness, Platoon, Beverly Hills Cop, Blue Velvet, Big, Predator, Videodrome, Robocop, Lethal Weapon, The Right Stuff, Murphy's Law, Borderline, Nighthawks, Victory, Excalibur, Sudden Impact, The Dead Pool, Cop, The Hitcher, Talk Radio, The Color of Money, Angel Heart?

reply

I have never seen most of them. Some I've seen long long time ago I don't remember how they looked like, thus I can't comment on them.

I just rewatched Robocop a few months ago and it definitely looked very dated. The RoboCop himself looked fine, but ED-209 movements were absolutely terrible.

The Shawshank Redemption
Fargo
American Beauty
Fight Club

How about "Lawrence of Arabia"? No special effects to go out of fashion, just spectacular landscapes you haven't seen in other films, damn good acting, adventure and insanity. The movie's sixty years old and doesn't show its age at all.

2001: A Space Odyssey (1970) - Still looks good.

I WILL SUGGEST MY TWO FAVORITE FILMS.

COOL HAND LUKE (1967)

PAPILLON (1973)

The Princess Bride

Best answer and the only one I agree with so far.

Difficult to think of any as there are many ways to be disqualified from "timelessness."
