What's with Hollywood's fetish for the Chinese market?

The only movies to make a decent profit are far and few like the Fast & Furious franchise and Marvel franchise. The rest that made over $400m are all Chinese films. Hell, even their patriotic film of kicking American butt was the 2nd highest grossing with $883m in 2021. Top 2 are patriotic movies about defeating foreigners. They're basically in the 90's to 2000's era of patriotic films the US used to churn out.

I find it amusing because you can't make a film defeating the Chinese else you get cancelled by China (company and probably actors who starred in it) as the worst case scenario to not being allowed to be shown in China.

Is Hollywood just trying to own itself as China gains more influence and control over it?

reply

My understanding is prior to the 2016 election some Hollywood studios were going to be sold to China. That is one of the reasons why a lot of films started coming out with anti American messages. They were hoping to gain favour to allow the sales to go through.

I am sure they were also eyeing a market with a billion people in it. All good in theory of course but it just goes to show how dumb and greedy some people can be. A lot of countries as well were hoping to gain China as a strong trading partner and ignoring their aggressive tendencies so it is no surprise a business would try the same.

"Aggressive tendencies" lol. Yeah like all those Chinese bombs dropping on Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria, Pakistan, Somalia, Yemen... Oh wait those aren't Chinese, those are from the country that accuses China of being aggressive.

reply

China is waiting for the right moment. When they get started, their aggression will make the tactical 'aggression' by the US look like a folk dance.

reply

Is the US military that inferior? I don't think so!

reply

I don't think the US leaders have the balls to go head to head with China. If China invaded Taiwan, Biden wouldn't do a thing.

reply

At least he could bomb Tibet.

I mean, liberate.

reply

would you want him to?
Taiwan isnt an american territory

reply

I would. And I'd rather fight China now than later. But with liberals more concerned about transgendered bathrooms I doubt that will happen. We are so screwed. Thanks to liberals. Who swore for years China was isolationist and posed no threat to anyone.

reply

@trevorb

Indeed.

China could defeat the U.S. without firing a shot. All they would need to do is cease shipment of their junk merchandise and half of the shelves in the country would be empty. The U.S. would be on its knees, begging.

Military action against China would be suicide. They have four times the population of the U.S.

reply

Having less population doesn't matter as long as you have nukes.

reply

i wonder if they have nukes

reply

Of course they do. America's nukes are probably made in China.

reply

Using nukes would be suicide, too.

reply

@jonathan

I'm afraid you are right.

reply

Deflection by tu quoque. Typical.

Foreign countries in general have way more control than we know about.
China, Russia, Saudi Arabia ...
It is because of our open mode of capitalism.
I think it was Khrushchev who say "the capitalists will sell us the rope to hang them", and he is looking right.
Our government is in the hands of forces we do not know about, with a huge pipeline of money and corruption behind it, and trillions of dollars removed from our economy and government spending in order to turn Americans against the government instead of motivate us to find out who is doing what behind the scenes.
Same with our media and biggest global corporations.
Meanwhile the Republican who are or say they are supported of unregulated capitalism never really talk about any of this, especially as a problem, and also never explain their vision of where we are going except to own the Libs ... who are fellow Americans.
We better open our eyes and put on our thinking caps instead of listening to the mindless BS we get from both parties, industries and media who will make whatever someone has the money to pay for.

Pithy post, well put.

China pandering in movies is annoying. I get it, they are a huge market and you want them to see your movie, but do Chinese get boners when they see a Chinese actor fumble their way through English dialogue?🤭

reply

On the contrary, they actually like Hollywood actors in Chinese movies, like Matt Damon in The Great Wall.

reply

A movie that never appealed to me at all. I'm not a Matt Damon fan.

reply

The only reason Hollywood likes anything is that they see money in it.

I mean, duh.
