movie you first hated, but now adore

for me 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie' (1972)
i didn't get it at all. thought it was just BS

after a few years i caught some other Buñuel works, watched this again.. and damn now it's one of my absolute favorites

I can't think of a movie that I changed my opinion that much on but

Team America, I thought was just OK when I watched it the first time.
But during that week jokes from the movie kept popping into my head and I would just laugh out loud at random times. So I watched it again and again and bought the DVD.
Classic.

Starship Troopers. Hated it but it was on Showtime way back before DVRs and I ended up watching it about 20x, it got better every time. The acting is mediocre but it's otherwise brilliant, and frankly, better than the book.

i was also on the fence with ST
until i loved it

reply

Being different from the book put me off at first, but once I accepted it as its own thing, I embraced it. Same with Sleepy Hollow.

reply

funny. saw it at the theatre and was enthralled. had also read the book years earlier, so it was a series of recollections.

Paul Verhoeven seldom wrong-footed.

reply

I was disappointed it was missing the scene from the book where they attack the Skinny city.

reply

Trainspotting.

The Blair Witch Project.

Hated this movie when it first came out.

I picked up the DVD about 15 years ago for 3 bucks. I wanted to give it another chance.

Now it's one of my favorites to show during my "31 Days of Horror" in October.

I love the atmosphere in BWP!

reply

Maybe you hated it because of the hype?

reply

I think you are correct. Everybody was making a big deal about BWP when it first came out. Wanted to see what all the hoopla was about :)

reply

Maybe I should rewatch it too.

Hated it.

last days of disco - i watched it with a bunch of other people when it came out, and it just didn't land with us. but i watched it again a few years later and really dug it, and an now a devoted whit stillman fan-boy.

reply

nice. love the title - i should watch this.

The Big Lebosky - saw it at the theatre and for some reason it just didn't land -until later. the wonderful chemistry between bridges, goodman & buscemi - and turturro - is just a perennial cinematic gem.

Sam Elliot bugged me then, that part didn't change.

This one for me too. I think I may have overdone the jalapenos on my nachos that day. I recall experiencing extreme discomfort walking out. Now I love the movie.

Hook (1991) I saw this movie in the theater and I didn't like it at all. However, I watched it again recently and now it's one of my favorite movies. RIP Robin Williams.
