Will streaming takes the place of movie theaters?

I believe streaming will pass movies theater by 2026. Theaters has become an inconvenience when compared to staying at home.

You may be right

Between the expense (7$ Coke, 9$ popcorn?!), the travel time, inconsiderate viewers with babies or phones, the 'theater experience' is a big fat nuisance now:/

When I went to see Once Upon A Time In Hollywood the previews ran 30 minutes long, I'm not making that up!

I enjoyed the movie a lot but it was already pretty long at 2 hrs 40 min...piling 30 minutes of previews in front of it was total sadism

Ha, nailed it. From overpriced snacks to inconsiderate pricks, the cinema experience sucks balls now.

I have a decent setup at home. Except for the odd movie here or there, I don't like going anymore.

Also, I freaking hate previews. They're WAY too long. And also, I'm the kinda person who hates spoilers. I just watch one or 2 trailers for a film & avoid all the others cause I don't wanna be spoiled but the freaking previews basically "force" me to watch trailers I avoided on purpose

The previews are bananas nowadays
I remember maybe 5-10 minutes of them when I was a kid

reply

that is truly annoying.
honestly, i'd pay more if it would mean trimming that down.
the discount theatre i go to down the street is a little more reasonable with that stuff. 10 minutes of previews tops.

but when i went to see the green knight on monday at the big multiplex there were 20+ grinding minutes of ads and previews. infuriating!

but i'll still go.

Same! I hated my experience with Tenet last year. Not because of the audio issues alone but before that, we had to sit through almost 45 minutes of previews.

I've NEVER sat through THAT many previews in my entire lifetime. Some people walked out & demanded a refund. It was horrible

reply

for me, it's a bit tolerable because i have the kindle app loaded on my phone, so i'll pop earplugs in and just read for that time. or listen to a podcast perhaps. no one cares if you've got your phone on during the previews, i think. or at least i've never gotten any looks or comments.

but it's still way too much.

reply

I can honestly take 10 minutes. But that's about it.

I'm just not a patient man. I'm not like prone to violence & outbursts or anything like that. I just really really dislike being kept waiting for too long for anything or anyone

reply

It's consistently 20 +minutes of previews at my local cinema. So I always go in 20 minutes late and have never missed the start of a movie

maybe. i still think there's something important in the theatrical experience that i just can't get at home. there's a controlled focus in being in a big room with a big screen and a nice sound-system that i can't get at home, no matter how big my tv is and how good my headphones are.

but i'm probably a member of a declining minority on that.

i think there will continue to be a place for theatres, but i don't think it's farfetched to see them becoming a niche experience. maybe going to the theatre will become a hipster/bougie experience, the same way kids will buy vinyl or even cassettes now.

There are some films that I just gotta see on the big screen but those don't come around very often nowadays. Like for example, I'm so glad I got to see Infinity War & Endgame on the big screen. Those were great experiences.

And more recently, I had an absolute blast watching The Suicide Squad in a theater. And I hope I get to see Dune on the big screen as well.

But apart from the odd movie here & there, I rarely go to the cinema anymore. Even before the pandemic.

reply

i was a regular theater-goer pre-pandemic, and i expect to be again - i've gone three times in two weeks - but i have to admit i'm pretty much the only one i know.

i went to the theatre at least twice a month, sometimes more. & i really don't think the movies that i've enjoyed the most would have landed for me in the same way if i hadn't had that forced focus of the theatre. endgame is one of those films for sure. but there are lots of other ones...red turtle, a ghost story, happiness, into the spider-verse...part of what made those movies hit my sweet spot was being part of an audience experiencing them, i truly believe.

I'm a regular moviegoer too. Are you planning on going to see anything this weekend, damosuzuki?

reply

i am!

pig is playing here, so i'm hoping to catch that sunday afternoon.

& don't breathe 2 as well, perhaps. & i might go see old too. i'm not really 'that' interested in seeing that one, but it's apparently going to be another warm weekend, so i might go to two movies on saturday just to enjoy the a/c.

are you planning on catching anything?

reply

I'm considering seeing Don't Breath 2 and/or Free Guy. I haven't fully decided yet. I haven't seen Pig yet, but it is not playing near me.

reply

pig is very very very good.
i don't want to say too much, because i think this movie should be experienced as cleanly as possible.
so i'll just say be prepared for a slowly paced & slowly unfolding movie. & that i loved it.

reply

I hope not. I like going to the movies.

reply

Eventually, yes. But not anytime soon. I think the pandemic has people gotten used watching movies at the comfort of their own homes. But there are still a lot of people who still miss going to the cinema.

I don't go as much as I used to but even I still wish to see some films on the big screen.

Streaming services are already recruiting big name & talented writers & directors. There are only a few 'Cinema aficionado' filmmakers left.

Also, films are getting shorter runs at theatres in the future. From the usual 90 days to just 45. Because almost every studio has a streaming service now & they want their new movies on their service as soon as possible.

reply

it's becoming more niche.

reply

I hope not. In Australia, cinema patronage peaked in 1996 and has been declining ever since.

I remember cinemas used to be packed and even having to sit up front.

The last time I was forced to sit up front was a 3D rerelease of Jurassic Park around 2014.

I love cinemas because it forces me to give the movie undivided attention. It allows me to become immersed in the picture.

Also as a sound guy, I know my home system can never come close.

You're sitting in a room with a sound system that can cost over $100,000. That's pretty cool.

Plus my local has a 4DX. I remind myself that it costs a few million to make each theatre.

reply

I think there's always going to be movie houses in big cities. I think you'll always have the option to stream a new movie with a bunch of strangers on a big screen if you want to. But you won't have to.

If anything is gonna save the theater system it will be Cameron's Avatar saga. You never know. No way in hell he let's those movies dump straight to streaming.
