My favorite films from 2003, in alphabetical order, were ...
(*an asterisk indicates that I own the film on either DVD or Blu-ray)
American Splendor*
Bend It Like Beckham*
The Dreamers
Girl with a Pearl Earring*
Hope Springs
The Last Samurai*
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King* (actually, I own the Extended version on Blu-ray)
Lost In Translation*
Love Actually*
Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World*
A Mighty Wind
Monster
Mystic River
Open Range
Runaway Jury*
School of Rock
Seabiscuit*
Secondhand Lions*
Under the Tuscan Sun*
Whale Rider*
Hmm, so of the 20 films I listed, I own 13 of them. That may be my largest percentage owned for any year so far.

reply

I'll give Open Range a shot.

I liked you figured out the percentages.

reply

Elf is best of all those films. I watched it for the first time maybe 10 years ago (not a Will Farrell fan) and it's great.

Finding Nemo second best.

reply

The 2000s were honestly a great time for comedies honestly, Old School, Road Trip, Wedding Crashers, etc. What happened to comedies like that nowadays, I feel like after 2016-ish or so we don't see as many good ones as we used to, or any box-office hits like that all.

reply

I've read that studios are increasingly looking for international revenue for their films.

Comedy's sometimes do not translate well across cultures. For instance, the Reds baseball club has it's first Japanese player. He was asked what the hardest thing is adjusting to American life, he responded "sarcasm". It is not used in Japan, and he has trouble identifying it.

reply

That may be true. I, as a Brit, don't like any of those films. It's been years since I saw an American comedy film that worked for me - or maybe I'm just getting old.

reply

Every generations humor does differ to some extent...the current PC culture has made it very difficult for the genre to come up with something new. One of my favorite comedies was the collaboration for America and British humor - A Fish Called Wanda (1988)

reply

Been a while since I saw it but I liked A Fish Called Wanda as well. To be fair not much British comedy works for me either and the stuff I do like seems to get cancelled very quickly.

A sequel that many people (including myself) wanted to see was Master and Commander.

Surely the studio knows this...maybe they couldn't come to terms with Crowe or just couldn't find a good script.

I would like to know the reason why one wasn't made.
