Although spanish is hard to pronounce, they could at least say it as:
Pe-whair-though Reeco".
Even though it's not perfect, it's so much closer.

Give us credit for pronouncing a Spanish R in Puerto.

I like the idea of substituting the spanish R for an english L, given that the spanish R touches the roof of the mouth.
I still think using a short TH sound works better than the english T, just based on feedback I've had from colombians I know who help me with my spanish.
Anyway, I'm going to run the L sound past them and ask how it sounds to their ears.
Did you know our D sounds like an R to them? I was told that todo sounded like toro.
So now I say toe- though, and they say it's pretty spot on.
Columbian Spanish sounds closer to standard textbook to me. I bet they cringe when you bring up the L sound.
The Puerto Rican dialect is very difficult to understand. Final S isn't pronounced and some words are shortened.
The R doesn't bother me. I remember mimicking the Spanish R when I was a toddler after hearing people speak Spanish.

Columbian as well as Argentinian Spanish sound both very clear. The Spanish spoken in, e.g., Cuba is sometimes difficult to understand, even for Spaniards .Some Cubans would say "Puelto Rico".

I'm in the US and I don't think I've ever heard it this way, with Puerto being given three syllables. Everyone I know says either "port-oh" or "pwehrt-oh." I do it the latter way but if I'm still mangling the Spanish I don't care; I don't get upset when Spanish speaking people call my country Estados Unidos.
