Are rental companies required to determine that you do or do not have insurance before renting a car?
Can they rent a vehicle to a customer with no insurance?
shareCan they rent a vehicle to a customer with no insurance?
shareEvery one I've been to has required me to show proof of insurance except for ones through work, then my employer assumed that.
shareYes they are.
Not if they can help it.
I’m not sure I follow

Yes they are.

Are they required to though?
I'm sure they do check , cos they dont want to risk losing the car wether its their insurance or yours.
but required?
I thout it would be just up to the driver to make sure they are insured?
Oh , unless it comes under that "Aiding and abetting" law , which pretty much makes sure anybody letting anybody drive their car must check they are insured , company or private citizen.
Although I'm pretty sure just asking the question constitutes.
are you going to rent a car?
Yes, and some have age restrictions as well which is probably a good idea
shareAgeist.

When I was about 20 me and a pal got to arguing about which of us would be a better stunt driver so as a friendly contest we went to rent a pair of cars and show off our skills
Long story short the Lady at Enterprise told us to piss off, we thought she was being a real jerk
(I wasn't exactly the genius then that I am now)
Enterprise Jerk Lady probably saved some lives and property that day
Car rental companies charge a fortune for rental car insurance. It is so lucrative to them that their reps are required to ask if you will buy it, even if you have your own insurance.
If you have car insurance on another car, you can use it instead (if the state mandates that they accept it). Enterprise Rent-A-Car verifies that you have it by calling your insurance company, after you give them its phone number. (They would not accept a view of the insurance card or policy, since you can cancel your own insurance at any time, and it might not be current.) I had a car that did not run, which was sitting at a repair shop for over a year. So I added back collision insurance, to avoid car rental insurance.
In many places pre-COVID19, Enterprise Rent-A-Car had lucrative weekend rental deals in the fall-spring (but not the summer). It was $10-$12 per day plus taxes and fees for Fri-Sun and a Monday return. You could rent it on Saturday and get the same rate for two days. Holiday weekends would not apply. Joining their free Club didn't do much, but might have sped processing and sometimes get them to skip the insurance check when they were busy.
Thread reminded me of this scene. So effin funny . LOL
Seinfeld - The Car Reservation

Everything in that video is TRUE! Many people do NOT show up for car rental reservations that it really is first-come, first-serve. Besides. when I made the same complaint, the answer was, "Everyone else who got that size car before you ALSO had a reservation.
The car insurance joke is also TRUE. Most car rentals are for business travelers, Monday through Friday. Decades ago, I heard that is why you should NOT purchase a used rental car. 1) They have high mileage, and (2) the drivers DO beat the hell out of the cars.
Most credit cards offer free insurance when you rent a car. It's automatic. I always get the rental company's insurance anyway. It makes it a far easier procedure if you do have an accident.
