What would have made Kingdom of the Crystal Skull not suck so bad?
Besides his age.
shareNot being made
shareUsing the Frank Darabont script draft that Spielberg wanted to do but Lucas vetoed:

Well, the first three referenced Christianity and negated religion in the fourth one; so there was a big disruption in the arc of the story line that may have turnrd people off. The alien aspect took the adventure theme that I come to love with the previous installments and the sudden change to the scifi theme made it feel out of place.
shareThey should have hired that chubby kid from Stand By Me for the Shia le 'Bleh part
shareJerry O'Connell as a non-greaser Mutt might have worked. If there's anyone who can nail down a young Ford, though, it's this guy:

He would have been a way better Han Solo than that Erenreich guy
shareJerry O’Connell?
shareYes...Inside joke
My friends and I constantly refer to him as 'that fat kid...'
We are not very mature around here😂
BUFF PROBABLY KNOWS HIM FROM TOMCATS...OR POSSIBLY AN INTERNET SEX TAPE.🤔
shareUh, Sliders?
shareI have no idea what that means
Sometimes I'm lucky like that

TOMCATS IS THE PEAK,OR LOW DEPENDING ON HOW YOU LOOK AT IT...OF THE LATE 90S/EARLY 2000S GROSS OUT COMEDY CRAZE...JAKE BUEY AMUSES ME.
Oh, I completely misunderstood that...the way you phrased that made 'Tomcats' sound like a gay porn movie joke or something, my bad
I'm a square:/
A different script and MacGuffin and a younger actor playing Indy.
When watching those movies as a kid I always envisioned Harrison Ford would continue playing Indy, showing his involvement during WWII, and finding artefacts like the Spear of Destiny and Staff of Moses whilst the Nazi’s pursue him with WWII raging in the background.
But when it became clear Ford was more interested in playing other roles, I hoped the Indy franchise could continue in a similar vein to the James Bond one with different actors playing Indiana Jones on film. Too bad it didn’t!
I have no interest in Indiana Jones 5 if Harrison is returning, which is a shame as the first three are among my favourite movies. I’d rather see Bradley Cooper or Chris Pratt have a go at Indy, but this isn’t happening, rumour has it Indy 5 will be the last entry and with Ford set to star.
I think Indy 4 was to setup Shia LeBuff to continue the Indiana Jones franchise. Too bad it didn't work out well.

Tone down the silly CGI scenes - swinging monkeys, nuked fridge etc., increase the practical effects/real life stunts, reduce the number of characters tagging along for the ride, make it darker, and yes possibly switch the artefact/goal from aliens to something more legit, although I'm kind of undecided as to whether this is a flaw in the film or not.
shareThe whole script sucked, I don’t think the effects and characters killed it
shareEverything I mentioned relates to the script so I'm not exactly disagreeing with you. The characters were poorly written though. I could take the Shia character as I think the dynamic between he and his father works well in this instance and you need a younger pair of hands with Indy being his age. With some of the others included it felt excessive. Marion and the pointless Ox weren't really needed, and it's hard to take seriously when you have 3 OAPs on this perilous adventure and they all get by without so much as a scratch. Like the poster above says it starts getting clogged up with characters who don't do much other than have banter with Indy.
