Movies you had to watch more than once to appreciate

I know most people usually try food or music and change their minds, but have any of you had the patience to go see a questionable movie over again and then enjoyed it?

District 9 (2009)
Tangled (2010)
Wreck-it Ralph (2012)

reply

The Exorcist (third viewing)
Trainspotting (second viewing)
Raging Bull (second viewing)

reply

I can relate with Trainspotting. Thought it was too crude and trashy, then I started to notice the dark humor and absurdity.

the witch
a ghost story (i liked it a lot the first time, but really fell for it on my 2nd watch)
uncle boonmee who can recall his past lives

A GHOST STORY IS A DICK...IT RAPED MY BRAIN AND IM HAVING TROUBLE RECOVERING.

reply

is a movie being a dick & raping your brain good? cuz that sounds like the kind of thing i go for.

more than any other movie i've watched in my life, a ghost story gets stuck in my head. random moments from it still pop into my mind all the time.

reply

GOOD...I GUESS...AS THE MOVIE WAS AMAZING...NOBODY ELSE I KNOW IN REAL LIFE LIKES IT AT ALL THOUGH.

reply

I probably have, but at the moment I can't recall a specific movie. 🤔 If I think of one, I'll let you know.

The Cabin in the Woods

Punch Drunk Love (2002)

For me it would be The Dark Knight. At first viewing in the theater I was like meh, too much talking. But on second viewing at home I was more relaxed and pay more attention to the dialogs it's actually better. I still think the whole Two-Face arc is unecessarily long tho'. Should have focused more on the Joker and have a shorter movie overall.

Also a curious case is The Sixth Sense. I was so mind blown by the twist I immidiately rewatched it. Knowing the ending, the second viewing was a different experience altogether. Can't say it's better per se, but it's different and equally fascinating nonetheless.

Primer

These are all total Sci-Fi mind fucks. You have to see them twice just to understand them.

I agree on all of those, but I did love Triangle the first time I saw it, I just didn't really understand all of it.

Yes, that's my point.

i like/love all those movies, except primer, which i still don't quite dig much to this day (i've watched it 4 or 5 times over the years, i'm sure).

but i really like carruth's followup movie 'upstream color,' so much so that it's 62 on my top 100.

i've watched triangle & time crimes multiple times, & i'm still not convinced that they really make sense, in that i'm not sure the movies ever really explain why their characters are doing what they do. that said, i don't really care about stuff like that. i think it's fine if movies don't make sense - they're experiences, not physics textbooks. as long as i'm having a good time, i don't mind being confuses.

I liked Primer, but I like Upstream Color more. I would say that it would be in my top 100 too. I just haven't actually made that list. I wish Carruth would come out with a new movie one of these years.

carruth gave an interview last year where he said he was done with film-making, but who knows...he wouldn't be the first person to retire & then un-retire.

I did know that he said that, but sometimes people have stories to tell, and I'm hoping that he has another one someday.
