Nah.
You could potentially take good care of yourself and have plenty of good years.

At 38, I feel like I might be in better shape than ever. Aside from things that may be beyond my control, I don’t see why I can’t keep it up.

reply

Ummmm, nope!

Given the way the elderly are treated and even if they were treated well it is still a depressing situation, I would rather have 50 awesome years and then die than have 80 average ones, the last 10 or so spent in decline.

I think it would make life easier too, you would know you only have 50 years to plan for financially, you could focus on what you really want to do.

reply

Do you have kids? I only ask because I think that if we only lived to 50 and wanted to procreate we'd have to do it young, and then if we had to work full time and raise children, I think that would be really a waste.

reply

I don't have kids so that probably plays a part in me liking the idea of 50 perfect years.

In terms of genetics, it is better to procreate while young anyway. As we get older the quality of our "stuff" whether we are male or female declines. I can see your point it would be a short life of reproducing at say 18, kid(s) out of house by the time we are 40ish, dead at 50.

I think it would result in a huge decline in the world's population which is not a bad thing at the moment.

I agree, I don't have kids either, but I'm also a lot older than 25 now, so thinking if I could go back, would I procreate if I died at 50 and I don't think so. I think if I had kids I would really want to experience being a grandmother too. I'm also all for the world's population decreasing.

If I was going to die at 50 and was in great shape I think we would really have to change the way society works. Mortgages and all that. Plus I'm not sure the 5 day work week would cut it either. I think if I was in optimal shape I'd want to spend more time doing fun things, than just working until I die.

It would make for a really good sci fi series.

A lot of people have kids because they hope in their old age someone will take care of them. I have always felt this was a very flawed reason to reproduce. And of course life has no guarantees, kids can die as can their parents. We may all like the idea of dying peacefully at 80 or after but again, no guarantees.

Not very PC but lets say the idea of being guaranteed a healthy and perfect life in exchange of dying at 50 was possible.

* People would probably return to coupling up and reproducing in their early teens as what would be considered old or mature would be altered.

* People who preferred to live till old age would be taxed heavily in return for society taking care of them. Also they would be expected to take care of their health.

* People probably wouldn't spend big money and decades in study so there might be a brain drain. Then again people might utilize their time better knowing they have less of it. So brain drain might be counter acted.

Let me live until 60 at peak and I would consider it... 50 seems kinda too short a life.

*Average life expectancy worldwide is about 72 years.

reply

Millions of people make the choice to die earlier, choosing to smoke nicotine cigarettes, abuse alcohol, or use narcotic drugs.

What the hell are you talking about? There is a story about The Picture of Dorian Gray, and it's a Cautionary Tale.
We aren't supposed to eff with Nature. I have outlived my Mom and Sister and often wish I didn't, but what is the alternative?

reply

Seems like if your health was optimum you wouldn’t die at 50

reply

I see the premise as a Sci Fi scenario you get perfection in exchange for a shorter life.

reply

No way.

I like getting older, I'm so much more confident and I enjoy not caring so much about appearance as I used to. To shorten my life so I can go through another 25 years concentrating on the more shallow aspects of life... it seems like a bum deal to me.

And as for physical decline, I'm 46 and I started working out only a few years ago, but now I'm in better shape than I've ever been. If I was stuck at 25-year old me I'd be trapped as a skinny bastard and I much prefer my body shape now.

Sorry, no deal for me.
