Looking for a good light hearted British Comedy series, any suggestions?

I have watched many American comedy series and now I am in mood to watch British comedy for a change. I liked watching IT Crowd and Doc Martin (loved it).

Faulty Towers was also alright but it's bit too old for my liking.

What I absolutely DO NOT enjoy is slapstic comedy.
Believe it or not I do not like to watch Mr. Bean.

I watched first 10 mins of The Office (UK) and didn't feel it was for me. I could be wrong. But I would like to hear your suggestions.

Black Books (2000-2004)
All episodes available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-X5oCV7hWgs

That looks promising. It's really amazing that it's entirely available on YouTube.

And it's only 3 seasons (18 episodes), so you don't have to catch up on 15 seasons.

reply

I agree this was a great series.

reply

I loved this.

Keeping Up Appearances is excellent

1990 right at the cut off mark.
Noted. Thanks : )

I'll second this recommendation. I've probably seen every episode at least a half dozen times, and I'm still watching them.

They did some tweaking after the first year, recasting one character and adding at least one other character. It was already funny before then, but IMO with those changes they hit it just right.

Also, have you seen BritBox -- https://www.britbox.com/ -- if you're into British TV this is worth looking at. Comedies of course, but a lot of other things as well.

Unfortunately it's only available in US and Canada?

Aggh ... I try to not be USA-centric, assuming that everyone I'm chatting with is from here, but sometimes I screw up. Sorry about that.

If you enjoyed IT Crowd try Father Ted, same writers and even funnier.

The Inbetweeners and Friday Night Dinner are worth a watch also.

reply

The Inbetweeners is comedy gold.

One Foot in the Grave

I'm not going to suggest A Sharp Intake of Breath or The Top Secret Life of Edgar Briggs or 'Allo 'Allo or Yes Minister because those are all earlier than your (1990?) cutoff. Even though they are all really funny. You could try Catastrophe, which is in the last couple years, but personally I didn't like it. It was ok I guess.

I'm going to suggest The Detectorists. It's not exactly a sitcom but it's just lovely. In fact, we should all watch it and then talk about it.

Also here's a fun video of Stephen Fry on British vs American comedy:

The Death of Stalin (2017) - The funniest thing I had for awhile. And very British.

Dinnerladies, written by and starring Victoria Wood.

Set in a factory canteen, its about the various characters that work there. The Northern England (Manchester accents) may be a little difficult at times, but its well worth watching because its brilliantly written by Victoria Wood, and the characters are very memorable.
