StoneKeeper's Summer Movie Guessing Game: I Recommend THIS Movie #1216 [Alexander Nevsky (1938) Winner: FredBurroughs]

I have a movie in mind and you have to guess which one it is. For each movie you guess, I will give a hint that connects your guess with the movie I have in mind.

For each guess, a connection is posted. Example of connections: Actor, length, genre, aspect ratio, language, country, year, director, actor, writer in common, rating, number of votes, nominations. It can even be something like: both movies involve Cabbage Patch Kids. Also, you can use Metascore color or rating, Rotten Tomatoes score, any award wins or nominations in common, same number of words in the title, plot keywords. Note: "Plot" in the IMDB advanced search links to "Plot Summary" on the film's page. "Keyword" in the advanced search links to "Plot Keyword" on the film's page.

Helpful search engine: https://www.imdb.com/search/title/ Click on Feature Film and TV Movie. Then modify for the hints as they are posted.

- The winner can either start a new game or say "pass". In case of a pass, the OP gets to start another one.
- After 12 hints, the point goes to the OP, after 15 incorrect guesses. He/she gets to start another one.
- Movie must have at least 3500 IMDB votes. Otherwise, add a bonus hint. No documentaries.
- Maximum 2 guesses per player per hint.
- Can't edit a guess once posted. Delete ONLY
- Post one Hint at a time.

Alexander Nevsky (1938)

Winner!

Lol I made this one too easy. It was only after I added the action genre hint that I checked and saw that there are only a few action-genre movies from the Soviet Union, at least in the 3500+ range, on IMDb. Ah well. XD

reply

Dude, I was seriously going to pick this one in the near future. In terms of resonating influence, this is the progenitor of the 'epic battle scene'. You can see the Nevsky DNA in just about every large scale war film.

reply

Well, you can still do it; though reusing a movie isn't common, there isn't a rule against it either and it's been done a few times (usually by accident, but still). Besides, this excellent movie can only benefit from being recommended twice.

This film is on YouTube for free viewing:

reply

Yep, and I recommend anybody who hasn't seen it to check it out. It really is excellent.

One of the good things about Soviet movies is that Mosfilm doesn't seem to try to restrict anybody from posting them online for free. Indeed, Mosfilm's official Youtube channel posts many of them for free itself. And lots of them, at least the more internationally famous ones, have English subtitles.

reply

Without checking I'm pretty sure this as well as many more older Soviet movies are in the public domain.

reply

Yeah, but even later ones which, by normal measures, wouldn't be old enough to be considered public domain. For example, there's a series of movies called Osvobozhdenie (Liberation), set in World War 2, which were made in the 1970s and are available on Youtube for free, posted by Mosfilm itself.

Btw that one (Osvobozhdenie) is fantastic too, and I've considered recommending it here except it's a five-part movie series and I wasn't sure if I could do that.

reply

It's a possibility, and I have considered titles that have already been recommended. There are just so many others that have yet to receive recognition, so I try to bring light to those yet to be mentioned.
