What was the last movie you watched?

And what would you rate it out of 10? I watched Lovely & Amazing (2001), directed by Nicole Holofcener and starring Catherine Keener, Brenda Blethyn, Emily Mortimer, Raven Goodwin, Jake Gyllenhaal, Dermot Mulroney and Clark Gregg. It is about a woman and her three daughters. I rated it a 7/10.

It Happened One Night (1934)
Definitely recommend. I loved it the first time I saw it years back, thought it was ok a few years back, and then today said dang that's a fine film. It did, for road trip rom-coms what "48 Hours" would do for buddy "cop" movies. It set the bar for that genre to beat. It swept the Academy Awards in the top 5 categories.
My rating 8/10. maybe maybe 9/10 if I was feeling it. But not a 10/10. Although I'm pretty tough on rating movies.

Enjoy your day

Thelma (2017) - Norwegian movie about a girl who falls in love with another girl, which also awakens her inherited telekinetic powers. It's not quite as salacious as that sounds, in fact it's pretty restrained and borders on tedious at times. The girls are pretty and the cinematography is impressive but ultimately this did not give me Norwegian wood. 6/10

serenity (20019) 7.5/10. I really liked it but i can understand the low score i guess.

Bone Tomahawk (2015) - This was right up my alley. There are three things I love in this world* Horror movies, Western movies and Kurt Russell. This had it all. It was also surprisingly funny in parts, as funny as a movie about flesh eating troglodytes terrorising ye old timey westerners can be. Just a really enjoyable genre flick. 8/10

* I love a few more things than that, actually, but those are still very good.

i love this movie. love it more every time i watch it. sitting here thinking about how much i like it makes me want to watch it again fro the billionth time.

i really like every film s crag zahler has made, love their adolescent metal fantasy tone & reactionary feel.

i even like that silly puppet master film he scripted.

but bone tomahawk is the best thing he's done so far.

reply

Thanks for your reply. Yeah, this is the first Zahler movie I've seen but I've already added Brawl in Cell Block 99 and Dragged Across Concrete to my Letterboxd watchlist just on the strength of it.

I can't believe I had never even heard of Bone Tomahawk until yesterday, it completely slipped under my radar. Which I don't really mind, there's something magical about discovering something that really appeals to you by accident.

reply

i have to admit i've always had a bit of a mental block when it comes to westerns, and i almost certainly wouldn't have watched bone... if someone on another board whose opinion i respected hadn't given it a strong recommend.

i really like brawl & concrete. concrete is absurdly long, far too long imo, but i still liked it a lot, & think brawl is a blast as well, & i really look forward to whatever he does next.

if you get around to his other films any time soon, let us know what you think.

reply

I sure will. Hopefully I can find them on the streaming services I use.

It won't be tonight though, I have Joker lined up to view and although I'm embarrassingly late to the party I'm excited to finally see it.

reply

if you have access to hoopla in your region, all three of his films are available there, plus the puppet master film he scripted, which i think is loads of fun.

i finished on the waterfront earlier this evening. i was kinda surprised by how much i liked it. i don't always go for the melodramatic feel of some films from this period, but this really worked for me. 4/5

i'm now watching halloween 5. it's terrible but i really just have it on in the background while i'm making dinner & generally arsing around.
