Your best western

What is your favorite western?

I'm going with a recent western rather than one of the older ones.
"Open Range" (2003) The story is straight forward and the most realistic.
It's not a very popular western but I think it's very good.

FOR A FEW DOLLARS MORE(1965)

A Fist Full of Dollars (1964) 'Nuff said.

The Searchers 1956

it's not a genre i've ever really fallen for tbh. there's something in watching sweaty men ride horses & shoot guns that makes all of my 'i'm bored' neurons fire.

i absolutely love bone tomahawk, though that's as much horror as it is western, i guess.

reply

Ever seen Cowboys and Aliens? It's pretty camp, but it's not boring lol

reply

never seen it.

but i just remembered that i also really liked the coen brothers two cracks at westerns.

so maybe i don't dislike them as much as i think i do.

reply

The Hateful Eight will keep you on the edge, too.

reply

You have never seen High Noon, Stagecoach or The Searchers??

reply

i've seen high noon & the searchers. high noon fairly recently, the searchers a good 25 years ago. & i've seen a good handful of other classics - high plains drifter, once upon a time in the west, things like that.

and i certainly wouldn't ever try to claim that they're not great or anything.

but i never seem to get on their wavelength, and as soon as they're over, they fall out of my head and i never think about them again, and i never really want to see them again.

i'm sure that's my failing and my loss.

Dances With Wolves

reply

That's a top 10 western.

They were supposed to make the books sequel into a mini series, but I guess it never panned out.

reply

Tough question, there are so many good ones

Maybe Tombstone, what a cast!

reply

Daniel Boone: Trail Blazer (1955) isn't famous either, but arguably the most underrated one from the decade. 👁

Since you didn't specify Movie or TV ----

Lonesome Dove
