brand upon the brain
videodrome
ginger snaps
my winnipeg
american mary

really, if i was being honest, i would have put forbidden room on that list over american mary, but having 3 guy maddin films in a top 5 would probably be a step too far. though probably more accurate.

reply

I've seen 4 of them. The only one I hated was My Winnipeg. It was such a chore for me.

reply

do you like other maddin films?

reply

The Saddest Music in the World

reply

Maddin rips! Just recently saw my first color Maddin film, Twilight of the Ice Nymphs. Have you seen that one?

reply

nice! that is one of his that i have yet to see. i like that there are maddin films that i haven't seen yet, in that i like knowing there's more of his weirdness out there in the universe waiting for me to experience.

reply

Yeah there are a good bunch I have yet to check out, he's damn prolific. Really like everything so far. Twilight of the Ice Nymphs is far from his best work, and most people will surely find it "boring", but I found it pretty fascinating in several key redeeming ways, and it made a strong impression on me. Lot of elements of its sensibility that I strongly relate to.

reply

maddin is a true original. i haven't loved every one of his films, but every one of them has been its own unique, daring entity, & i think there's no one else quite like him.

reply

Here is a top 3..

Arráncame la vida
Nosotros los Nobles

Después de Lucía

reply

My favourite Mexican movie is El Mariachi. Maybe Y Tu Mamá También
#2.

reply

El mariachi I don’t think it’s from Mexico. The director is from Latin America but I don’t think that’s a film from my country.

reply

You are correct. It's American. But other than Robert Rodriguez, everything else about it is Mexican.

reply

I love Y Tu Mamá También and Como agua para chocolate (1992).

reply

New Waterford Girl (1999)
Pontypool (2008)
Anne of Green Gables (1985) I know its a mini series
Mon oncle Antoine (1971)
Polytechnique (2009)

My top movies change constantly. I was trying to mix genres here as I think if I didn't my top 5 would have all been horror.

reply

There's an Anne of Green Gables from 1934. I was shocked to find the movie is American. I've seen all of the ones you mentioned except for New Waterford Girl.

reply

Polytechnique wasn’t bad but I much preferred Maelström

reply

Maelström is a great movie. I kinda forgot about it. Like I said, my lists change constantly. I have such a difficult time coming up with favourites because there is so much out there that is good, and even more that I like.

reply

Underrated country for film. I'd also like to visit.

reply

I’d love to visit Canada too. House swap!!

reply

I've always felt both countries are very similar. They're both countries no one hates, they keep to themselves and are part of the Commonwealth.

reply

Australia is awesome! I was blessed to see a tiny part (Brisbane to Sydney) in August and plan to visit Canadia (sic) once the C-virus has subsided (and it will!).

Take the Money and Run (1969)

reply

Wolf Creek (2005)
Snowtown (2011)
The Tunnel (2011)
Razorback (1984)
Black Water (2008)

reply

I love Razorback too, classic.

Didn't care much for Snowtown though, well made and acted but such a depressing film.

reply

I really liked The Tunnel. One of the better FF films out there.

reply

Really hard to narrow down 5 British movies, but heres my faves:

Zulu (1964)
Goldfinger (1964)
Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979)
The Italian Job (1969)
The Lady Vanishes (1938)

Attend, es-tu Québécois mon esti?

reply

No, but Quebec makes the best movies.

reply

Bound
U-Turn
Palmetto
Romeo is Bleeding
Sin City

reply

Québécois? We are mortal enemies apparently.

reply

Why? You Ontarien?

reply

Albertan. Not so much in Edmonton, but the rural UCP supporters blame Quebec for all of our woes.

reply

I don’t understand.
UCP??
If it’s politics, I’m vlontarily ignorant on the subject.

reply

It is politics. I would gladly be ignorant as well.

reply

Hey your cool, you post a lot, what are you waiting for to join my game and weekly thread??

reply

I've had a few guesses on the game, never won though. I enjoy reading the weekly watch lists.

reply

That’s what’s up!
