Is your favorite film a ripoff?

Terror (1978) has been my favorite film since I saw it, in the summer of 2014.

The director himself admits that it was inspired by "Suspiria". Being aware of this, I have no intention of ever seeing what is possibly Argento's best work.

I was so thrilled by Terror that I've seen it about 55 times, and am convinced that the film that "served as it's inspiration" would never be as good, in my eyes. True story.

Alien is one of my favorite horror movies, but it did borrow from It, the Terror From Beyond Space. Same basic premise, with a killer alien sneaking around a ship picking off crew members.

reply

I didn't know that, actually.
Unlike some predecessors, that "It" movie you speak of didn't achieve fame.

reply

No, Alien was better in every way, really. It's better remembered for a reason.

reply

Alien also ripped off Night of the Blood Beast. That entire plot point of a guy being found comatose, surprising everyone by coming back to life and then turning out to be a host for an alien baby was from this movie.

reply

That one I had forgotten about. It does sound like Alien, though.

Terrible movie. MST3K ended up making fun of it. If it influenced the writers of Alien, it's a part of horror history, though!

reply

The sheer quantity of movies that in turn carbon copied Alien is so out of control. One that I think is interesting though is Galaxy of Terror (1981). James Cameron second unit directed and did production design on it, which eventually lead to him directing Aliens. Imitation comes full circle.

reply

Reservoir Dogs is a sort of rip-off of City on Fire. The main plot was lifted and a couple of scenes were directly copied, but if you actually watch both movies you'll see they're very differrent.

reply

Isn't every movie inspired by another work in some aspect?

reply

REPEATEDLY SINCE THE BEGINNING OF TIME.

reply

True, if something was totally original it would have to be from another world.

reply

True, but I guess I'm asking about favorite films that are considered "carbon copies" of previous flicks.

dogtooth is one of my very favourite films, but apparently its premise is almost identical to the earlier mexican film 'the castle of purity.' a poster here, whose name i'm blanking on, mentions this every time i bring up how much i love dogtooth.

i haven't watched castle of purity yet, so i can't exactly say how much its plot resembles dogtooth, but the premises are almost carbon copies.

reply

I think sometimes a clone has more charm than the preceding film. For example, I find "creature" much more entertaining than Alien, which it's pretty much a ripoff of.

reply

i watched creature last september, but honestly i can barely remember a thing about it. i only gave it a 1.5 on letterboxd, so i guess whatever i thought, the gist of it wasn't positive.

but i'm glad you like it! you're entitled to your preferences.

The Lion King is one of my all time favorite. It was a blatant ripoff of Kimba the White Lion. Disney just never admit it. Simba, Kimba, Simba, Kimba. So obvious.

reply

Disney just never admitted it? I see...

reply

There's a brilliant video on YouTube that shows how all the character designs, plot points and even sequences were ripped off from Kimba The White Lion wholesale. It was like the animators, character designers, writers and storyboard artists went, "Okay, let's just take the key parts of Kimba and draw them better." I generally hate using YouTube as any source of information, but this video was very well done and researched: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UfJvKIDS9n8&t=229s

Interesting. Thank you.

One of my favorite Rom Coms and also a heist movie is not a rip off but a remake and that is the Thomas Crown affair( 1999 version)

Ohh and my favorite tv show is highly inspired in Sherlock Holmes. Which is House MD.

House’s only friend is James Wilson just like for Holmes his friend is John Watson.
House is a genius doctor just like Holmes a genius detective.

House like Holmes lives in apartment 212B.

I hadn't heard of Terror before, but if it's Suspiria influenced I will definitely be checking it out. Very cool to have another poster who's into stuff like this! You're in good company here.

I will say though, definitely don't sleep on Suspiria! It's great, and an important and influential landmark in horror cinema, and if it's not as good as your favorite flick, maybe it will only bolster your love for it.
: )

reply

I would, but I collect, rather than stream. In any case, I definitely prefer the cheesy stuff. I recently bought a low-budget horror called "Roadkill". I'll let you know what I think of it when I get around to seeing it. [yes]

I absolutely LOVE Seven Waves Away (Abandon Ship). It's a ripoff of Hitchcock's Lifeboat, but it's so much better IMO.

I guess I could say Airplane, because believe it or not, that movie is a note for note reshoot of Zero Hero. Even the costumes, scenes and dialogues were the same, just tweaked with goofy lines and slapstick.
