I finally saw The Shawshank Redemption - Are there any classics you haven't seen yet?

I watched it last night and thought it was excellent. I really need to get round to seeing some more 'must see' films.

reply

Never seen Footloose...never will.

I have never seen Gone with the Wind...not in any hurry to see it, but I might.

reply

Footloose will probably disappoint you as it was far-fetched then and probably super far-fetched now lol.

reply

Footloose is so delightfully cheesy and fun. The commitment by the film makers to so absurd a premise, with such serious intent, is magical. Everybody involved in the production is passionate, giving 110 percent. We need more movies like that.

reply

Footloose is a good fun popcorn film.

reply

I pretty much like popcorn with any movie.

reply

Or just popcorn full stop.

reply

Exactly!

reply

You sure took your time on that one.

😎

reply

Good things come to those that........ zzz 💤 😴

Shawshank is indeed excellent, worthy of all its praise. I think it’s great that all these years later it can still be seen with fresh eyes and touch someone new. That’s the beauty of movies.

I’ve never seen Avatar, I think I’m one of the few. I’ll get around to it one day.

reply

Avatar is INCREDIBLY visually striking!!!!

reply

True, but theres little else there .....

reply

I like they story too. Even though it's premise, for the most part, is nothing new. It's pretty much American history. Which has been told in movies and TV shows for about a century now. Still a great movie in my book though.

reply

I haven't seen Avatar either.

reply

Avatar is a great film; a film that "should be seen on the big screen.

reply

Watching Avatar not on the big screen is pointless. Better off not seeing it at all.

reply

Ok.

reply

Avatar is ok.

reply

I've tried watching Avatar at least 3 times since it's release, and I just can't get into it.

It's just so corny.. the dialogue is horrendous, and the casting is just bizarre. I like Sam Worthington but he just seems so oddly placed in this role.

The CGI seems to hold up pretty well, but it's nothing we hadn't seen in video games before then..

The story seems to be a cut and paste of 'Dances With Wolves' except the Natives are replaced with Blue people.

reply

You should have your movie card revoked for that for shame!! 😜😜😜😜

reply

If you knew all the classic films I’ve not seen yet, I think you’d be disappointed in me 😔

reply

I've only recently seen True Grit and The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance. But those were waaaay before my time.

reply

The remake of True Grit is good too.

reply

I’m a person who is against remakes in most cases but I have to say I like True Grit (2010) better than the original.

reply

Even John Wayne himself wasn't crazy about it and didn't feel worthy of his Oscar and didn't like Kim Hunter's performance.

reply

It took almost immediately to get to a cringey vagina joke.

reply

The Shawskank Redemption

reply

I've never watched: (Some I have watched clips of them on Youtube but never the entire movies)
Citizen Kane
Casablanca
Singin' in the Rain
Psycho
Some Like It Hot
North by Northwest
Vertigo
Lawrence of Arabia
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
On the Waterfront
Seven Samurai
etc.

reply

No Psycho?!?! For shame!! 😝😝😝😝

reply

I don't like horrors.

reply

Or classic movies for that matter 😂😂😂😂

reply

At least I have watched The Shawshank Redemption three times already.

reply

Not quite classic status yet but... it is indeed the very best one out of all the movies listed here. One of the greatest movies ever made.

reply

Give it enough time, it surely will be a classic.

reply

Oh, no doubt!!

reply

Ok, don’t rub it in, lol.

reply

When I first watched Seven Samurai..I thought SUBTITLES! I'll never get through this...

The story is so good/compelling, that after 10 min you forget you are reading.

reply

Many of my absolute favorite films are subtitled. Once you watch enough of them it won’t be an issue.

reply

^^^This^^^ I especially like Korean movies.

reply

Korean horror movies are top-notch!!

reply

> Some Like It Hot
> North by Northwest

I've also never seen either of those, and have them both recorded on my DVR right now. You've inspired me; I'm gonna watch them both this week.

> One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

Opinions differ, but FWIW I wouldn't call that one a classic. Just "ok." Jack Nicholson is a fine actor, but I think he was miscast here. But a far bigger problem is that much of the book is simply untranslatable to the big screen. The book's POV character is seriously psychotic, and much of the action is what goes on inside his head. Unreal delusions and visions, but some penetrating insights into life and American culture along the way. Had the filmmakers tried to put those parts in the movie it would have looked like nothing more than a two hour LSD trip. But those are the parts that really make the novel a classic, and with them cut out, what's left is a movie that's good but IMO doesn't merit being on any "must see" list. Again, all just my opinion, and worth what you paid for it. ;)

reply

OFOTCN is most definitely a classic. One doesn't have to love a movie for it to be a classic. 😊

reply

> One doesn't have to love a movie for it to be a classic.

True. But since I never said that I dislike Cuckoo's Nest -- quite the opposite in fact, I called it "ok" and "good" -- I fail to see what your point is, or if you even have one.

reply

Um, yeah. I thought my point was REAL clear. It's definitely a classic even though you think it's only an "ok" movie. Classic status has zero to do with whether you like, love, hate or think it's just ok or whether you think it's a must-see. If you fail to see my "point" this time, well that's on you. 😂😂😂😂

reply

You must watch "One flew over".

reply

Same here except: -
Singin' in the Rain (My favourite musical)
Lawrence of Arabia
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest

reply

Quite a few amazing films on that list! Casablanca is among the most iconic movies of all time and something of a comfort film - greatest ensemble cast, ever! And Psycho is dazzling.

reply

Would you rate Inception a classic?

I doubt I'll ever see it. That dream within a dream stuff just sounds kind of dumb to me. Not my kind of movie.

And I'm not very good about seeing foreign movies. There's quite a few classics I haven't got around to.

reply

The term 'Classic' is probably just like cars... minimum 25 years old.

reply

So cars / movies from 1995 are already classics?

reply

Makes me (50) feel old

reply

My car is 30 ,but it has to be 40 for the UK gov to give it a break and stop charging me £240 per yer for permission to go on the road

reply

Gone With the Wind. I've only seen parts here and there.

I don't have a good excuse as to why.
