Clockwork is Kubrick’s masterpiece
2001 is a close second, and the Shining is great

Clockwork is fantastic, and I absolutely love it.
I don't see why we need to choose one masterpiece out of his brilliant oeuvre though, Moviebuff. For me his career is a masterstroke in gestalt. I give him a lot of points for always trying something completely new, and while the outcome of any given film was sometimes greater than others, he consistently directed from an overarching vision and made every decision, from the fine grain to large ie what material to tackle next, from an inspired synthesis of instinct and intelligence that was all his own.
Yeah. He was a genius, no doubt. I think Clockwork is my favorite followed closely by 2001 and The Shining.

Best are Spartacus, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Paths Of Glory.
Kubrick hated Spartacus. He took over directing in the middle of filming and didn't have control over the script. He never felt like it was his movie, and would never make another movie unless he had complete control over everything.

Seriously, that sounds like nonsense. But, Kubrick complained that the character of Spartacus had no faults or quirks. Despite the film being a huge box office success, gaining four Oscars, and being considered to rank among the very best of historical epics, Kubrick disowned it, and did not include it as part of his canon.
I give the movie a 10/10 but it's not a masterpiece for me due to the major coincidences in the second half: Alex runs into the droogs who are now cops, Alex runs into the old man under the bridge and Alex ends up at the house of the woman he raped and is still being lived in by her husband.
shareI think those coincidences were deliberately far fetched and fitting with the movie’s fantasy laden dystopian tone.
sharePersonally, in ranking his films, I would name 2001, Dr Strangelove, Barry Lyndon, The Killing, Paths of Glory, Lolita and The Shining before I got to A Clockwork Orange.
